greek syntax principle 35

The infinitive regularly functions as the object (or complement) of a verb. Hence, they are called complementary infinitives.
The infinitive will be anarthrous. cf. BBG 32.14; GGBB p. 598.
They almost always follow these verbs:

  • αρχομαι,
  • βουλομαι,
  • δυναμαι (always followed by a complementary infinitive),
  • επιτρεπω,
  • ζητεω,
  • θελω,
  • μελλω,
  • οφειλω.
