2Pet 1:1 Συμεὼν Πέτρος δοῦλος καὶ ἀπόστολος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῖς ἰσότιμον ἡμῖν λαχοῦσιν πίστιν ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ τοῦ θεοῦ ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ·

2Pet 1:2 χάρις ὑμῖν καὶ εἰρήνη πληθυνθείη ἐν ἐπιγνώσει τοῦ θεοῦ καὶ Ἰησοῦ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν.

2Pet 1:3 Ὡς πάντα ἡμῖν τῆς θείας δυνάμεως αὐτοῦ τὰ πρὸς ζωὴν καὶ εὐσέβειαν δεδωρημένης διὰ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ καλέσαντος ἡμᾶς ἰδίᾳ δόξῃ καὶ ἀρετῇ,

2Pet 1:4 δι’ ὧν τὰ τίμια καὶ μέγιστα ἡμῖν ἐπαγγέλματα δεδώρηται, ἵνα διὰ τούτων γένησθε θείας κοινωνοὶ φύσεως, ἀποφυγόντες τῆς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ἐν ἐπιθυμίᾳ φθορᾶς.

2Pet 1:5 καὶ αὐτὸ τοῦτο δὲ σπουδὴν πᾶσαν παρεισενέγκαντες ἐπιχορηγήσατε ἐν τῇ πίστει ὑμῶν τὴν ἀρετήν, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἀρετῇ τὴν γνῶσιν,

2Pet 1:6 ἐν δὲ τῇ γνώσει τὴν ἐγκράτειαν, ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐγκρατείᾳ τὴν ὑπομονήν, ἐν δὲ τῇ ὑπομονῇ τὴν εὐσέβειαν,

2Pet 1:7 ἐν δὲ τῇ εὐσεβείᾳ τὴν φιλαδελφίαν, ἐν δὲ τῇ φιλαδελφίᾳ τὴν ἀγάπην·

2Pet 1:8 ταῦτα γὰρ ὑμῖν ὑπάρχοντα καὶ πλεονάζοντα οὐκ ἀργοὺς οὐδὲ ἀκάρπους καθίστησιν εἰς τὴν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ ἐπίγνωσιν·

2Pet 1:9 ᾧ γὰρ μὴ πάρεστιν ταῦτα, τυφλός ἐστιν μυωπάζων, λήθην λαβὼν τοῦ καθαρισμοῦ τῶν πάλαι αὐτοῦ ἁμαρτημάτων.

2Pet 1:10 διὸ μᾶλλον, ἀδελφοί, σπουδάσατε βεβαίαν ὑμῶν τὴν κλῆσιν καὶ ἐκλογὴν ποιεῖσθαι· ταῦτα γὰρ ποιοῦντες οὐ μὴ πταίσητέ ποτε·

2Pet 1:11 οὕτως γὰρ πλουσίως ἐπιχορηγηθήσεται ὑμῖν ἡ εἴσοδος εἰς τὴν αἰώνιον βασιλείαν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν καὶ σωτῆρος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

2Pet 1:12 Διὸ μελλήσω ἀεὶ ὑμᾶς ὑπομιμνῄσκειν περὶ τούτων, καίπερ εἰδότας καὶ ἐστηριγμένους ἐν τῇ παρούσῃ ἀληθείᾳ.

2Pet 1:13 δίκαιον δὲ ἡγοῦμαι, ἐφ’ ὅσον εἰμὶ ἐν τούτῳ τῷ σκηνώματι, διεγείρειν ὑμᾶς ἐν ὑπομνήσει,

2Pet 1:14 εἰδὼς ὅτι ταχινή ἐστιν ἡ ἀπόθεσις τοῦ σκηνώματός μου, καθὼς καὶ ὁ κύριος ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς ἐδήλωσέν μοι·

2Pet 1:15 σπουδάσω δὲ καὶ ἑκάστοτε ἔχειν ὑμᾶς μετὰ τὴν ἐμὴν ἔξοδον τὴν τούτων μνήμην ποιεῖσθαι.

2Pet 1:16 Οὐ γὰρ σεσοφισμένοις μύθοις ἐξακολουθήσαντες ἐγνωρίσαμεν ὑμῖν τὴν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ δύναμιν καὶ παρουσίαν, ἀλλ’ ἐπόπται γενηθέντες τῆς ἐκείνου μεγαλειότητος.

2Pet 1:17 λαβὼν γὰρ παρὰ θεοῦ πατρὸς τιμὴν καὶ δόξαν φωνῆς ἐνεχθείσης αὐτῷ τοιᾶσδε ὑπὸ τῆς μεγαλοπρεποῦς δόξης· Ὁ υἱός μου ὁ ἀγαπητός μου οὗτός ἐστιν, εἰς ὃν ἐγὼ εὐδόκησα—

2Pet 1:18 καὶ ταύτην τὴν φωνὴν ἡμεῖς ἠκούσαμεν ἐξ οὐρανοῦ ἐνεχθεῖσαν σὺν αὐτῷ ὄντες ἐν τῷ ἁγίῳ ὄρει.

 


2Pet 1:19

καὶ ἔχομεν βεβαιότερον τὸν προφητικὸν λόγον, ᾧ καλῶς ποιεῖτε προσέχοντες ὡς λύχνῳ φαίνοντι ἐν αὐχμηρῷ τόπῳ, ἕως οὗ ἡμέρα διαυγάσῃ καὶ φωσφόρος ἀνατείλῃ ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν·

and we have a most sure prophetic word to which you do well, giving heed as a lamp shining in a filthy place until the day might dawn and the morning star might arise in your hearts.

Paraphrase:  Now the word which we heard on the mount of Transfiguration was something never to be forgotten.  It shows us that all the prophecies which we read of in Scripture are sure and certain.  They will not and cannot fail. (Joshua 21:45)  That is why the best thing you can do is to place your trust and confidence entirely in these writings.  They are like a bright light shining in a dark and filthy place.  Our life here is dark and difficult; sometimes your hope may dwindle to a bare flicker.  You might cry out with the Psalmist, “Will the Lord reject forever? And will He never be favorable again?  Has His lovingkindness ceased forever? Has His promise come to an end forever?  Has God forgotten to be gracious, Or has He in anger withdrawn His compassion? (Psalm 77:7-9)  But even in these dark times, the prophecies of Scripture come to us a like a bright shining light.  They dispel our darkness and our despair.  They are like the day-star which rises in the morning and is the promise of a new day.  They remind us that God has not forgotten us; His timing is not ours. (2 Peter 3:8)  Soon enough, the sun will rise never to set again. (Revelation 21:1)

Comments:

See principle 32 and Deissmann’s very interesting comments on βεβαιότερον.  By its spelling, this adjective is clearly in the comparative degree.  How to understand this?  What two things are being compared?

  1. Is the voice heard on the mount of transfiguration and the prophetic word being compared?  This is the meaning of the KJV which has “We have also a more sure word of prophecy…”  In other words, the prophetic word is even more reliable than the voice heard on the mount of Transfiguration.
  2. Or is the comparison between how firm the confirmation is; i.e. the voice heard on the mount of transfiguration was confirmed to be reliable but the prophetic word has an even more reliable confirmation.  Consider the ESV:  “And we have the prophetic word more fully confirmed…”
  3. Or it is possible the comparative here is functioning as a superlative (cf GGBB p299) as the NIV: “We also have the prophetic message as something completely reliable…”

2Pet 1:20

τοῦτο πρῶτον γινώσκοντες ὅτι πᾶσα προφητεία γραφῆς ἰδίας ἐπιλύσεως οὐ γίνεται,

knowing this first that all prophecies of Scripture do not come from ones own explanation.

Paraphrase:  You might be wondering why all these prophecies are such a source of comfort and hope for God’s children.  Here’s why.  Because we know that all these prophecies did not originate from the prophet’s own imagination.  These are not just clever stories which some prophet made up to entertain us. (2 Peter 1:16)

Comments:

The difficulty here centers around the question of whether Peter is speaking about the origin of the prophecy or about the interpretation of these prophecies in the present.  \

  • For the former, see the NIV: …no prophecy of Scripture came about by the prophet’s own interpretation of things.
  • For the latter, see the NASB: …no prophecy of Scripture is a matter of one’s own interpretation.

 


2Pet 1:21

οὐ γὰρ θελήματι ἀνθρώπου ἠνέχθη προφητεία ποτέ, ἀλλὰ ὑπὸ πνεύματος ἁγίου φερόμενοι ἐλάλησαν ἀπὸ θεοῦ ἄνθρωποι.

For not by the will of man, prophecy was ever carried along, but men, being carried by the Holy Spirit, spoke from God.

Paraphrase:  On the contrary, these men, while they were writing, were under the oversight of the Holy Spirit, such that no error ever crept into their writing.  That is why we say that their writings are Scripture by which we mean that they come from God Himself.  These prophecies which speak so much comfort to us did not arise because some person chose to make up a silly story.  Certainly not.  God Himself speaks to us through what these men wrote, and that is why we can rely on them so completely that all our anxiety about the future is resolved.
