Exod 16:1

Exod 16:4
וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־מֹשֶׁ֔ה הִנְנִ֨י מַמְטִ֥יר לָכֶ֛ם לֶ֖חֶם מִן־הַשָּׁמָ֑יִם וְיָצָ֨א הָעָ֤ם וְלָֽקְטוּ֙ דְּבַר־י֣וֹם בְּיוֹמ֔וֹ לְמַ֧עַן אֲנַסֶּ֛נּוּ הֲיֵלֵ֥ךְ בְּתוֹרָתִ֖י אִם־לֹֽא׃
Exod 16:5
וְהָיָה֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁ֔י וְהֵכִ֖ינוּ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־יָבִ֑יאוּ וְהָיָ֣ה מִשְׁנֶ֔ה עַ֥ל אֲשֶֽׁר־יִלְקְט֖וּ י֥וֹם׀ יֽוֹם׃ס
And it will be, on the sixth day, that they will prepare what they caused to enter, and it will be double because they will take day day.
Paraphrase: Now things will change a bit on the sixth day seeing as the following day is the Sabbath. The Israelites will still go out and gather in the manna as they usually do. When they prepare it, however, the manna will provide double the amount of food as was produced on the other days. Because of this, there will be no need to go out and gather manna on the Sabbath.

Gesenius lists עַל אֲשֶׁר as a causal conjunction; see 158a but here it has the meaning of “in addition to.” Waltke & O’Connor write: “The preposition can mark an object of excess (cf. ‘on top of that’)…” p217
Did Israel already know about the Sabbath or was this the first time they had heard of it?

וַיִּלְקְט֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֔קֶר אִ֖ישׁ כְּפִ֣י אָכְל֑וֹ וְחַ֥ם הַשֶּׁ֖מֶשׁ וְנָמָֽס׃
Exod 16:22
וַיְהִ֣י׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשִּׁשִּׁ֗י לָֽקְט֥וּ לֶ֙חֶם֙ מִשְׁנֶ֔ה שְׁנֵ֥י הָעֹ֖מֶר לָאֶחָ֑ד וַיָּבֹ֙אוּ֙ כָּל־נְשִׂיאֵ֣י הָֽעֵדָ֔ה וַיַּגִּ֖ידוּ לְמֹשֶֽׁה׃
And it was, on the sixth day, they took bread double; two omers to each, and every chief of the congregation came, and they told Moses.
Paraphrase: On the sixth day, the Israelites went out and gathered in the manna they would need for the day. As they prepared it, however, the manna produced double the amount of food which they needed for that day. Each person now had four quarts; double what they usually received. The heads of the families were alarmed at this since they had been strictly warned by Moses not to gather any more than one day’s supply. (Ex 16:19) The elders of the people quickly went and reported this to Moses.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם ה֚וּא אֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה שַׁבָּת֧וֹן שַׁבַּת־קֹ֛דֶשׁ לַֽיהוָ֖ה מָחָ֑ר אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־תֹּאפ֞וּ אֵפ֗וּ וְאֵ֤ת אֲשֶֽׁר־תְּבַשְּׁלוּ֙ בַּשֵּׁ֔לוּ וְאֵת֙ כָּל־הָ֣עֹדֵ֔ף הַנִּ֧יחוּ לָכֶ֛ם לְמִשְׁמֶ֖רֶת עַד־הַבֹּֽקֶר׃
And he said to them, this is what YHWH spoke: A Sabbath, a holy Sabbath to YHWH is tomorrow. That which you bake, bake; and that which you boil, boil; and all the leftovers, deposit for yourselves to be preserved to the morning.
Paraphrase: Moses then explained to them, not having told them what God had said previously about the sixth day (Ex. 16:5), why the food they gathered had mysteriously doubled. “Tomorrow,” announced Moses, “is the Sabbath which as you know is a holy day set aside for YHWH, our God. Have you grown so complacent in your observance of this day that now you don’t even understand why God has given you this double portion on the sixth day? Have you completely forgotten what God Himself did on this day when He first created the world? Now this is what you are to do. Take the portion that you have received and prepare it for your families. Whatever is left over, set aside for tomorrow. There will be no gathering of food on the Sabbath; you will eat from what is left over from today’s supply. In this way, we will honor God and His day. Do not worry that what you lay over for tomorrow will spoil as it did previously. (Ex 16:20)
Comments:
Again, the question here is whether the Sabbath was instituted for the first time on this occasion, or whether it was something Israel knew from the creation account and was part of their routine.
Exod 16:24
וַיַּנִּ֤יחוּ אֹתוֹ֙ עַד־הַבֹּ֔קֶר כַּאֲשֶׁ֖ר צִוָּ֣ה מֹשֶׁ֑ה וְלֹ֣א הִבְאִ֔ישׁ וְרִמָּ֖ה לֹא־הָ֥יְתָה בּֽוֹ׃
And they deposited it until the morning as Moses commanded and it did not smell and a maggot was not in it.
Paraphrase: The Israelites did as Moses commanded and set aside the leftovers for the next day. When they awoke the next day and checked their food supply, it was as Moses had said. The leftover manna had no smell; neither was it infested with maggots.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר מֹשֶׁה֙ אִכְלֻ֣הוּ הַיּ֔וֹם כִּֽי־שַׁבָּ֥ת הַיּ֖וֹם לַיהוָ֑ה הַיּ֕וֹם לֹ֥א תִמְצָאֻ֖הוּ בַּשָּׂדֶֽה׃
and Moses said, “Eat it today because a Sabbath is today for YHWH; today you will not find it in the field.
Paraphrase: Moses then announced, “Eat your supply of manna with joy and gratitude in your heart to YHWH. Today is the Sabbath, and it is fitting that we celebrate God’s generosity to us in supplying us with an abundance of food on His holy day. No need to go out gathering today; you wouldn’t find any manna out there anyway.
Come, let us sing to the LORD!
Let us shout joyfully to the Rock of our salvation.
Let us come to Him with thanksgiving.
Let us sing psalms of praise to Him.
For the LORD is a great God, a great King above all gods.
He holds in His hands the depths of the earth and the mightiest mountains.
The sea belongs to Him, for He made it. His hands formed the dry land, too.
Come, let us worship and bow down.
Let us kneel before the LORD our maker, for He is our God.

שֵׁ֥שֶׁת יָמִ֖ים תִּלְקְטֻ֑הוּ וּבַיּ֧וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֛י שַׁבָּ֖ת לֹ֥א יִֽהְיֶה־בּֽוֹ׃
six days you may gather it and on the seventh day, the Sabbath, there will be none on it.
Paraphrase: In the future, you can count on this. You will have six days to gather manna. Each day, you will gather what you need for that day. No more; no less. Then on the seventh day, do not expect to see any manna at all. The seventh day is YHWH’s Sabbath, and we will observe it as a day of worship. There will be no manna on the Sabbath; and therefore, no food gathering on that day. This will be your practice from here on out.

Exod 16:27
וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֔י יָצְא֥וּ מִן־הָעָ֖ם לִלְקֹ֑ט וְלֹ֖א מָצָֽאוּ׃ס
and it was, on the seventh day, they went forth from the people to gather and they did not find.
Paraphrase: In spite of Moses’ words, some Israelites persisted in going out on the Sabbath to see if it was really true. They found it hard to believe that God would do what Moses had said. (Ex 16:4) As they searched, however, they found no manna. Moses had spoken the truth. These skeptical Israelites slunk back to their tents duly chastised and shamed for their unbelief.
