sentence

A sentence is a group of words that taken together express a complete thought.  Sentences are sometimes classified by [glossary-ignore]function[/glossary-ignore]:

  • An interrogative sentence asks a question (and is punctuated with a “?”).
  • An exclamatory sentence makes an exclamation (and is punctuated with a “!”).
    An imperative sentence gives a command (and is punctuated with a “.”).
  • A declarative sentence makes a statement (and is punctuated with a “.”).

Sentences are sometimes classified by form:

  • A simple sentence has one independent clause
  • A complex sentence has one independent and one or more dependent clauses.
  • A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses.
  • A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
