A sentence is a group of words that taken together express a complete thought. Sentences are sometimes classified by [glossary-ignore]function[/glossary-ignore]:
- An interrogative sentence asks a question (and is punctuated with a “?”).
- An exclamatory sentence makes an exclamation (and is punctuated with a “!”).
An imperative sentence gives a command (and is punctuated with a “.”). - A declarative sentence makes a statement (and is punctuated with a “.”).
Sentences are sometimes classified by form:
- A simple sentence has one independent clause
- A complex sentence has one independent and one or more dependent clauses.
- A compound sentence has two or more independent clauses.
- A compound-complex sentence has two or more independent clauses and one or more dependent clauses.
