A syllable is a unit of pronunciation; e.g. the word “syllable” can be broken down into three such units: syl – la – ble. Some grammarians have terms for these:
- ultima – the last syllable in a word
- penult – the next-to-last
- antepenult – the third-from-last
In the word syllable,
- syl- is the antepenult,
- -la- is the penult and
- -ble is the ultima.
Other grammarians use the terms propretonic, pretonic, and tonic.
Hebrew syllables can also be stressed or unstressed. video
