Ecclesiastes 5

Ecclesiastes 5:1

Guard your feet when you go to the house of God and to draw near to hear, to give a sacrifice as fools for there is no knowing in them to do evil.

Paraphrase:  Be careful when you go to the temple to make a vow.  When you approach the house of God, you should have a spirit of humble and sincere submission to God’s will.  Be careful you don’t bring the same kind of sacrifice a fool might bring.  They don’t even understand that what they are doing is terribly offensive to God.

Comments:

For וְקר֣וֹב, note that the infinitive absolute can be used as a subject. §113(1a)

הַכְּסִילִים is an adverbial noun showing manner; see Joüon 126(d) and §118(r).

Ecclesiastes 5:2

Do not hurry on your mouth; and your heart, do not hasten to cause a word to go forth before God, for God is in heaven and you are on earth.  Therefore, let your words be few.

Paraphrase:  Don’t speak thoughtlessly.  Don’t let words fly out of your mouth without careful consideration especially when you are standing in the presence of God in His holy sanctuary.  Remember that He hears every word you speak.  God is the Great King of heaven and earth.  He created it all, and there is nothing in it which is hidden from Him.  So when you come to His house and you are going to make a vow, stop, pause, and consider.  Is this vow rash, untruthful, unjust, or unnecessary?  Perhaps you should give it some time and think it over.

Comments:

See the third command.

Ecclesiastes 5:3

For the dream came with much labor and the voice of the fool with many words.

Paraphrase:  Think of all the bizarre dreams that arise in people’s minds when they are busy and stressed.  It’s just like this when a foolish person comes to the temple to make a vow.  They stand before God and make all sorts of ridiculous promises which they never intend to keep.  On and on they talk, piling one promise on top of another.

Ecclesiastes 5:4

When you vow a vow to God, do not delay to complete it for there is no delight with fools what you vow, complete.

Paraphrase:  On the contrary, when you have decided to make a vow and you have thought through it carefully, then go ahead and make that vow.  God is pleased with it.  Once you have made that vow, be diligent to keep the promise you made.  God does not take any delight in those who made rash vows or vows which they never intend to keep.  That is why you need to be careful when you make a vow.  Vows must be kept.

Ecclesiastes 5:5

Good that you do not vow than that you vow and do not complete.

Paraphrase:  Let it be an established principle; it is better to make no vow at all than to make a vow and fail to keep it.

Comments:

מִשֶׁתִּדּוֹר = preposition min (comparative use) + the relative pronoun (not אשר as is common in this book) + the verb תִּדּוֹר (to vow)
