2 Samuel 7

2 Samuel 7:1

and it was, when the king was living in his house, and YHWH caused him to rest from all his surrounding enemies

Paraphrase:  Now after these victories which YHWH had given to David over the Jebusites (2 Samuel 5:6) and the Philistines (2 Samuel 5:17), David was finally able to settle down in his palace (Deuteronomy 12:10; Joshua 23:1) and think about peace time activities.  The nations that surrounded Israel were pacified and no longer a threat.

Comments:

כִּי sometimes functions as a subordinating conjunction referring to a process occurring simultaneously with the main clause. §164(2)

2 Samuel 7:2

and the king said to Nathan, the prophet, look please, I am living in a house of cedar, and the ark of God is living in the middle of a curtain.

Paraphrase:  It was at this time, that the king noticed something.  “Nathan,” he said to the prophet, “have you noticed that I am living in this magnificent palace while the Ark, which is a symbol of God’s presence, is sitting behind a curtain in a lowly tent.  Is this the way we magnify the Name of our God?  Is this in keeping with the majesty and transcendence of YHWH, our Great King?” (1 Chronicles 22:5)

2 Samuel 7:3

And Nathan said to the king, “All what is in your heart, go, do for YHWH is with you.”

Paraphrase:  Nathan shook his head in agreement.  “You’re exactly right, king.  This is not an acceptable state of affairs.  I’m ashamed to say that I had not noticed.  Whatever you are thinking, please do it quickly.  Our God is worthy of our best efforts.”

and it was that in that night, and it was YHWH spoke to Nathan saying,

Paraphrase:  That night, however, YHWH spoke to Nathan,

2 Samuel 7:6

because I have not lived in a house since I caused the sons of Israel to go up from Egypt and until this day and I was going in a tent and in a tabernacle.

Paraphrase:  From the time I took you out from Egypt to the present time, I have never lived in a fixed house.  I have always moved about with you in this tabernacle.

Comments:

לְמִיּוֹם is a merger of the lamed and min prepositions with the noun “day” and means “since.”

The NET sees “tent” and “tabernacle” here as a hendiadys (see §570) and translates it as  “Instead, I was traveling with them and living [or tabernacling] in a tent.”

2 Samuel 7:7

In all what I was going with all the sons of Israel, when did I ever speak one [word] to the tribes of Israel which I commanded to pasture my people Israel saying, “Why do you not build for me a house of cedar?”

Paraphrase:  Everywhere we went, I was with you and at no time did I ever say one word to you about building me a beautiful temple of gold, silver, and cedar.  On the contrary, I had appointed and commissioned the heads (1 Chronicles 17:6) of each tribe to care for and to shepherd My people.  My thought was for them, not for Myself.

2 Samuel 7:8

and now, thus you will speak to My servant, to David, thus says YHWH of hosts, “I took you from the sheepfold from after the flock to be the leader over My people, over Israel.

Paraphrase:  Now give this message to My servant, David.  “Thus says YHWH, the Great King and Sovereign over heaven and earth.  Remember how I took you from tending sheep and made you king over all My people Israel.

2 Samuel 7:9

and I was with you in all what you went and I cut her off, all your enemies from before you and I made for you a great name, as the name of the great men which [are] on the land.

Paraphrase:  Through all the ups and downs of your administration, I was with you.  Every battle you fought, I defeated the enemy and sent them flying in all directions. (Deuteronomy 28:7)  At times, your position seemed impossible to maintain.  Even then, I brought you through; so that, over time, your name and reputation spread far and wide; no one dared to challenge you anymore.  You became one of the leading men of the time.

2 Samuel 7:10

and I will establish a place for My people, for Israel, and I will plant him, and he will settle in his place and not be agitated again, and the sons of unrighteousness will not continue to afflict him as in the past.

Paraphrase:  Now this is what I have done for you, and I am not finished.  I will go on to carve out a place in this land for My people.  I will plant him in his own country just as a gardener carefully plants each plant in its own special place.  Israel will settle down here and begin to prosper.  All the troubles which came down on his head from the surrounding nations will be at an end.  Those who shed blood and act without any moral restraint will be driven back and will not be permitted to harm My people any longer

and from the days which I commissioned judges over My people Israel, and I caused you to rest from all your enemies, and YHWH revealed to you that a house YHWH will build for you.

Paraphrase:  as they did during the time of the judges who I had appointed to care for and protect My people.  Now things have changed, however.  I have given you rest from the constant fighting which you had to do when you were still getting established.  There were so many enemies who wanted you out, but that is all in the past.  Now here is My word for you.  You wanted to build Me a house; no, that’s not what will happen.  I am going to build you a house.”
