Job 11

Job 11:1

And Zophar, the Naamathite, answered and said, …

Paraphrase:  When Job finished his reply to Bildad, Zophar spoke up.  He had been waiting rather impatiently for Job to finish, and now he took his chance.

Comments:

Davidson calls (p162) Zophar Job’s “last and least worthy opponent.”

Job 11:2

And He will reveal to you secrets of wisdom because double for understanding, and know that God forgets for you some of your sins.

Paraphrase:  Oh that God would show you how vast His knowledge is.  How much of God’s knowledge is hidden from us, and yet you claim to know it!  God’s understanding is far more complex than we can ever fathom.  Be sure of this, Job, you’ve sinned far worse than you can imagine, and this is not hidden from God.  He knows everything you’ve done.  This punishment is far less than what you deserve.  Most of your sins, God has dismissed and overlooked.  He’s not giving you the real punishment which you deserve; God is going easy on you.

Comments:

The partitive use of min.

The more natural way of translating the last clause is …and know that God is causing you to forget some of your sins.  The translation we gave better fits the context.

Job 11:7

An investigation of God will you find?  to perfection the Almighty will you find?

Paraphrase: Do you think you can launch an official inquiry into the ways of God in order to discover whether He has done right?  Or will you make a thorough investigation into all His actions and motives and presume to know all of what He has done and why He did it?

Comments:

Gesenius says §150h that אִם often introduces a double question where the second question repeats and restates the first.
