Isa 11:1
וְיָצָ֥א חֹ֖טֶר מִגֵּ֣זַע יִשָׁ֑י וְנֵ֖צֶר מִשָּׁרָשָׁ֥יו יִפְרֶֽה׃
A shoot will go forth from the stump of Jesse, and a branch from his roots will bear fruit.
Paraphrase: When YHWH rises up to cut down all these trees, then all that will be left of these nations is a stump, each stump being a testimony to the pride and power each of these nations once possessed. Among these stumps will be the stump of Jesse; again, a testimony to the glory and power that was once possessed by the kingdom of David and Solomon. Look now, and see what has become of it. It’s just an old, rotting stump without any hope or purpose. What happened to God’s people? Weren’t these the people with whom YHWH, the Great King, had made a covenant? Weren’t these the people that YHWH led through the Red Sea, through the wilderness all the way to the land of Canaan? Weren’t these the people who God gave the land of Canaan even though it was owned by other kings much stronger than they? What will become of God’s people? Is it all over with them just as it was will be with the nations of Assyria and others? What about the promises which God made to their fathers Abraham (Genesis 12:2), Isaac (Genesis 28:13), and Jacob (Genesis 28:13-15)? and the covenant He made with David? (Psalm 89:3)
Then YHWH spoke through His prophet, Isaiah, “Look a little closer at the stump of Jesse. Do you see it? Do you see the little plant that is sprouting from this stump? It is coming from the stump of Jesse. This little sprout will grow out of this stump and will bear fruit to God’s glory.

Isa 11:2
וְנָחָ֥ה עָלָ֖יו ר֣וּחַ יְהוָ֑ה ר֧וּחַ חָכְמָ֣ה וּבִינָ֗ה ר֤וּחַ עֵצָה֙ וּגְבוּרָ֔ה ר֥וּחַ דַּ֖עַת וְיִרְאַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃
And the Spirit of YHWH will rest on Him, a spirit of wisdom and understanding; a spirit of advice and strength; a spirit of knowledge and the fear of YHWH.
Paraphrase: Now this little sprout is very fragile and weak. Any animal that stepped on it would destroy it immediately. How could anyone pin their hopes on such a fragile plant? It appears that the hope which Israel had placed in Jesse’s tree are dashed. But stop; take another look at this little sprout! It’s not just a sprout. On the contrary, this sprout has the Spirit of YHWH resting on it. That is why this plant is so much stronger than it looks. It may look weak and vulnerable; but God has placed on Him His own Spirit. Hence, this sprout has a strength that is not His own. Not only is this little sprout full of strength, but He also has great wisdom and understanding which enables Him to give wise counsel to those who need it. He also has great knowledge and piety so that He is able to say to anyone, “Come children, listen to Me; I will teach you the fear of YHWH.” (Psalm 34:11)
