Jeremiah 22:24

Alive I am, an utterance of YHWH, that if Coniyahu, son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, a signet ring on my right hand, then from there, I will tear you off.

Paraphrase: This is the Great King, YHWH speaking.  I swear on My very life that although Jehoiachin is the signet ring on My right hand, I will still tear him off and throw him far from Me.  All his privileges mean nothing to Me in light of his constant unfaithfulness to Me and My covenant.

Comments:

The first כִּי is like a content οτι; see here.  It introduces the content of the oath.  The second כִּי introduces the apodosis.  The אִם introduces the protasis.  Ewald notes (p271) that אִם can take the meaning of although instead of its usual meaning of if.

For אֶתְּקֶנְךָּ See 58(4).

Jeremiah 22:25

And I will give you into the hand of those seeking your life and into the hand of those you are afraid of their face and into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babel and into the hand of the Chaldeans.

Paraphrase: Then I will leave you defenseless before all your enemies.  Those who terrify you the most will come in from every side; you will be entirely in their power.  Who are these people?  They are the most dreaded of all enemies, Nebuchadnezzar and all the host of men who fight for him.  I will give you over into their hands.

Jeremiah 22:26

and I will hurl you and your mother, who birthed you, on another land where you were not born, and there you will die.

Paraphrase: Then, I will take hold of you and hurl you into a land far away from Me and My holy dwelling place. (Psalm 9:11; 48:1-2; 76:2)  Both you and your mother, Nehushta (2 Kings 24:8), who taught you to commit such wickedness, will be thrown into another land where you will not know the language, you will not understand the culture, and you will be a castaway.  No one will care for you; they will look on you with contempt. (Deuteronomy 28:36-37; 63-68)

Comments:

“These three birth images are counterbalanced tersely with the words “there you will die.”” (Craigie on this verse)

Jeremiah 22:27

And on the land which they are lifting up their soul to return there, there to that place, they will not return.

Paraphrase: In despair, they will lift up their eyes longing to return to their homeland, but the decision has been made.  The die has been cast.  They will never return to the promised land again; they will die and be buried in a strange country.

Jeremiah 22:28

Is it not a pot despised and being broken this man, Coniah? or is it a vessel where there is no delight in it?  Why is he being hurled out and his seed? and being thrown to a land which he does not know?

Paraphrase: Look at this miserable man, Jehoiachin!  Is he a washed up king with no hope for leading My people or doesn’t anyone want him to be king?  One of these two things must be true.  People are wondering.  Why was this king and his family thrown out of the land?  Why are they now living in a land where they do not have any friends and where the culture is so strange to them?

Comments:

A disjunctive question is proposing two mutually exclusive options, either this… or that.  Muraoka says (p575) to expect the הֲ interrogative in the first option and אִם in the second as we have here.

Jeremiah 22:29

Oh land! land! land!  Hear the word of YHWH!

Paraphrase: It’s over!  It’s all over; there’s no hope any more.  The nation of Israel is finished.  The covenant is cancelled; YHWH has cut them off.  Alas, alas.

Comments:

It is the men of the land who being addressed as is clear from the following verse commanding them to write.  This is a kind of funeral dirge.

Jeremiah 22:30

Thus says YHWH, “Write this man childless; a mighty man will not prosper in his days because a man from his seed will not prosper dwelling on the throne of David and ruling still in Judah.

Paraphrase: Thus says YHWH, the Great King, who is holy and true, who has the key of David, who opens and no one shuts, who shuts and no one opens (Revelation 3:7) to the scribe.  “Take your pen and write down next to this man’s entry, childless.  For even though he has children (Matthew 1:12), none of them will ever sit on the throne of David in keeping with the promise I made to my servant David. (2 Samuel 7:12-13)  None of them will ever be kings over the land of Judah and rule My people.”
