syllable

A syllable is a unit of pronunciation; e.g. the word “syllable” can be broken down into three such units:   syl – la – ble.   Some grammarians have terms for these:

  • ultima – the last syllable in a word
  • penult – the next-to-last
  • antepenult – the third-from-last

In the word syllable,

  • syl- is the antepenult,
  • -la- is the penult and
  • -ble is the ultima.

Other grammarians use the terms propretonic, pretonic, and tonic.
