John 7


John 7:1

Καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα, περιεπάτει ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ· οὐ γὰρ ἤθελεν ἐν τῇ Ἰουδαίᾳ περιπατεῖν, ὅτι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἀποκτεῖναι.

 

John 7:2

ἦν δὲ ἐγγὺς ἡ ἑορτὴ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἡ σκηνοπηγία.

 

John 7:3

εἶπον οὖν πρὸς αὐτὸν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ, Μετάβηθι ἐντεῦθεν καὶ ὕπαγε εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν, ἵνα καὶ οἱ μαθηταί σου θεωρήσουσιν «τὰ ἔργα» σοῦ ἃ ποιεῖς.

 

John 7:4

οὐδεὶς γάρ τι ἐν κρυπτῷ ποιεῖ καὶ ζητεῖ αὐτὸς ἐν παρρησίᾳ εἶναι. εἰ ταῦτα ποιεῖς, φανέρωσον σεαυτὸν τῷ κόσμῳ.

 

John 7:5

οὐδὲ γὰρ οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ ἐπίστευον εἰς αὐτόν.

 

John 7:6

Λέγει οὖν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ὁ καιρὸς ὁ ἐμὸς οὔπω πάρεστιν, ὁ δὲ καιρὸς ὁ ὑμέτερος πάντοτέ ἐστιν ἕτοιμος.

 

John 7:7

οὐ δύναται ὁ κόσμος μισεῖν ὑμᾶς· ἐμὲ δὲ μισεῖ, ὅτι ἐγὼ μαρτυρῶ περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ πονηρά ἐστιν.

 

John 7:8

ὑμεῖς ἀνάβητε εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν. ἐγὼ οὐκ ἀναβαίνω εἰς τὴν ἑορτὴν ταύτην, ὅτι ὁ ἐμὸς καιρὸς οὔπω πεπλήρωται.

 

John 7:9

Ταῦτα δὲ εἰπὼν αὐτὸς*, ἔμεινεν ἐν τῇ Γαλιλαίᾳ.

 

John 7:10

Ὡς δὲ ἀνέβησαν οἱ ἀδελφοὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν, τότε καὶ αὐτὸς ἀνέβη, οὐ φανερῶς, ἀλλὰ ὡς ἐν κρυπτῷ.

 

John 7:11

Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι ἐζήτουν αὐτὸν ἐν τῇ ἑορτῇ καὶ ἔλεγον, Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος;

 

John 7:12

καὶ γογγυσμὸς περὶ αὐτοῦ ἦν πολὺς ἐν τοῖς ὄχλοις. οἱ μὲν ἔλεγον ὅτι, Ἀγαθός ἐστιν. Ἄλλοι δὲ ἔλεγον, Οὔ, ἀλλὰ πλανᾷ τὸν ὄχλον.

 

John 7:13

Οὐδεὶς μέντοι παρρησίᾳ ἐλάλει περὶ αὐτοῦ, διὰ τὸν φόβον τῶν Ἰουδαίων.

 

John 7:14

Ἤδη δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς μεσούσης, ἀνέβη Ἰησοῦς εἰς τὸ ἱερὸν καὶ ἐδίδασκεν.

 

John 7:15

ἐθαύμαζον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, λέγοντες, Πῶς οὗτος γράμματα οἶδεν, μὴ μεμαθηκώς;

 

John 7:16

Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν αὐτοῖς ‹ὁ› Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν Ἡ, Ἐμὴ διδαχὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐμὴ, ἀλλὰ τοῦ πέμψαντός με.

 

John 7:17

ἐάν τις θέλῃ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιεῖν, γνώσεται περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς, πότερον ἐκ τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐστιν, ἢ ἐγὼ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ λαλῶ.

 

John 7:18

ὁ ἀφ’ ἑαυτοῦ λαλῶν, τὴν δόξαν τὴν ἰδίαν ζητεῖ· ὁ δὲ ζητῶν τὴν δόξαν τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτὸν, οὗτος ἀληθής ἐστιν, καὶ ἀδικία ἐν αὐτῷ οὐκ ἔστιν.

 

John 7:19

Οὐ Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν* ὑμῖν τὸν νόμον, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐξ ὑμῶν ποιεῖ τὸν νόμον; τί με ζητεῖτε ἀποκτεῖναι;

 

John 7:20

Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ὄχλος, Δαιμόνιον ἔχεις· τίς σε ζητεῖ ἀποκτεῖναι;

 

John 7:21

Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἓν ἔργον ἐποίησα, καὶ πάντες θαυμάζετε.

 

John 7:22

διὰ τοῦτο Μωϋσῆς δέδωκεν ὑμῖν τὴν περιτομήν— οὐχ ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐστὶν, ἀλλ’ ἐκ τῶν πατέρων— καὶ ἐν σαββάτῳ περιτέμνετε ἄνθρωπον.

 

John 7:23

εἰ περιτομὴν λαμβάνει ἄνθρωπος ἐν σαββάτῳ ἵνα μὴ λυθῇ ὁ νόμος Μωϋσέως, ἐμοὶ χολᾶτε ὅτι ὅλον ἄνθρωπον ὑγιῆ ἐποίησα ἐν σαββάτῳ;

 

John 7:24

μὴ κρίνετε κατ’ ὄψιν, ἀλλὰ τὴν δικαίαν κρίσιν κρίνετε*.

 

John 7:25

Ἔλεγον οὖν τινες ἐκ τῶν Ἱεροσολυμιτῶν, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὃν ζητοῦσιν ἀποκτεῖναι;

 

John 7:26

καὶ ἴδε, παρρησίᾳ λαλεῖ, καὶ οὐδὲν αὐτῷ λέγουσιν Μή‿ ποτε. ἀληθῶς ἔγνωσαν οἱ ἄρχοντες ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός;

 

John 7:27

ἀλλὰ τοῦτον, οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν. ὁ δὲ Χριστὸς, ὅταν ἔρχηται, οὐδεὶς γινώσκει πόθεν ἐστίν.

 

John 7:28

Ἔκραξεν οὖν ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ διδάσκων ὁ Ἰησοῦς, καὶ λέγων, Κἀμὲ οἴδατε, καὶ οἴδατε πόθεν εἰμί· καὶ ἀπ’ ἐμαυτοῦ οὐκ ἐλήλυθα, ἀλλ’ ἔστιν ἀληθινὸς ὁ πέμψας με, ὃν ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε.

 

John 7:29

ἐγὼ οἶδα αὐτόν, ὅτι παρ’ αὐτοῦ εἰμι, κἀκεῖνός με ἀπέστειλεν.

 

John 7:30

Ἐζήτουν οὖν αὐτὸν πιάσαι, καὶ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὴν χεῖρα, ὅτι οὔπω ἐληλύθει ἡ ὥρα αὐτοῦ.

 

John 7:31

Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου δὲ πολλοὶ ἐπίστευσαν εἰς αὐτόν καὶ ἔλεγον, Ὁ Χριστὸς, ὅταν ἔλθῃ, μὴ πλείονα σημεῖα ποιήσει ὧν οὗτος ἐποίησεν;

 

John 7:32

Ἤκουσαν οἱ Φαρισαῖοι τοῦ ὄχλου γογγύζοντος περὶ αὐτοῦ ταῦτα, καὶ ἀπέστειλαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι ὑπηρέτας, ἵνα πιάσωσιν αὐτόν.

 

John 7:33

εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Ἔτι χρόνον μικρὸν μεθ’ ὑμῶν εἰμι, καὶ ὑπάγω πρὸς τὸν πέμψαντά με.

 

John 7:34

ζητήσετέ με καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με]· καὶ ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν.

 

John 7:35

Εἶπον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι πρὸς ἑαυτούς, Ποῦ οὗτος μέλλει πορεύεσθαι ὅτι ἡμεῖς οὐχ εὑρήσομεν αὐτόν; μὴ εἰς τὴν Διασπορὰν τῶν Ἑλλήνων μέλλει πορεύεσθαι καὶ διδάσκειν τοὺς Ἕλληνας;

 

John 7:36

τίς ἐστιν ὁ λόγος οὗτος ὃν εἶπεν, Ζητήσετέ με, καὶ οὐχ εὑρήσετέ [με], καὶ Ὅπου εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν

 


John 7:37

Ἐν δὲ τῇ ἐσχάτῃ ἡμέρᾳ, τῇ μεγάλῃ τῆς ἑορτῆς, εἱστήκει ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἔκραξεν, λέγων, Ἐάν τις διψᾷ, ἐρχέσθω πρός με καὶ πινέτω.

Now on the last great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out saying, “If anyone might thirst, let him come to Me and let him drink.”

Paraphrase:  Finally, the last day of the feast of tabernacles arrived. (Leviticus 23:33-44)  This was the best day of all, and all the people were waiting for it with great anticipation.  This was the day the priest would go to the pool of Siloam and bring back the water to pour on the altar.  Crowds of people followed the high priest, waving their branches and singing for joy, as he went in great solemnity to the pool of Siloam, filled the golden pitcher, and returned to the altar.  There he was joined by another priest who carried a pitcher of wine.  Together, these two approached the altar, climbed onto the platform which surrounded it, and poured their pitchers into the silver funnels which caused the water and wine to flow all over the altar.  Then the Levites began to chant the Hallel (Psalm 113-118), and the people responded with their parts.  Line after line was repeated until the last verse was solemnly pronounced.

Give thanks to the LORD, for He is good; For His lovingkindness is everlasting. (Psalm 118:29)

Then a hush fell on the crowd as they reflected on the happy scene which they had just witnessed.  Suddenly, a loud and clear voice broke the silence.  Everyone in the temple square heard it!  “If anyone is thirsty,” cried out the voice, “He may come to Me and drink.  Anyone who is thirsty may come without delay and may drink freely from the water which gives eternal life.” (Revelation 22:17)  It was the voice of Jesus; everyone turned to see Him.

See Feast of Tabernacles.  Edersheim (p232):  The most joyous of all festive seasons in Israel was that of the ‘Feast of Tabernacles.

See bottom of p257 for the ceremonies which belonged to this day and even more detail in Edersheim (p157).  The ceremony of the priest going to the pool of Siloam was not a biblical command.  Edersheim speculates that just after the Hallel Psalms had been chanted, there would have been a pause.  During the silence of this pause, Jesus lifted up His voice and pointed to the gift of the Holy Spirit as the fulfillment of the symbolism of the pouring out of the water onto the altar.

 


John 7:38

ὁ πιστεύων εἰς ἐμέ, καθὼς εἶπεν ἡ γραφή· Ποταμοὶ ἐκ τῆς κοιλίας αὐτοῦ ῥεύσουσιν ὕδατος ζῶντος.

The one believing in Me even as the Scripture says, “Rivers from his belly will flow, living water.”

Paraphrase:  “Every person who comes to Me and drinks of the salvation that I provide,” Jesus continued, “Will become a source of salvation themselves.  Salvation will flow from these believing ones just as the water flowed from Ezekiel’s temple (Ezekiel 47) and gave life to the nations.” (Ezekiel 47:9)

John 7:39

τοῦτο δὲ εἶπεν περὶ τοῦ Πνεύματος, οὗ ἔμελλον λαμβάνειν οἱ πιστεύσαντες εἰς αὐτόν· οὔπω γὰρ ἦν Πνεῦμα, ὅτι Ἰησοῦς οὐδέπω ἐδοξάσθη.

Now this He said concerning the Spirit whom the ones believing in Him were about to receive, for not yet was the Spirit because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Paraphrase:  Now let me pause a minute and explain what Jesus meant when He said these words.  First, He was using the picture of water as a picture of salvation. (Isaiah 55:1)  Drinking the water which Jesus gives is the equivalent of receiving the salvation that He offers. (John 4:14)  Second, water flowing from believers is the same picture.  Believers bring the message of salvation in Christ to the world; and when anyone embraces that message for himself, he is saved.  Those who drink of this water have their spiritual thirst quenched.  Third, the water itself is a reference to the Holy Spirit since He is the only One who can give us a new birth. (John 3:5)  Apart from this new birth, we are completely unable to come to Christ and to receive the water which gives us eternal life. (John 6:44, 65)  Now at the time Jesus said these things, the people of God had not yet been baptized in the Holy Spirit. (Acts 1:5)  This glorious baptism, however, was right around the corner.  That’s why Jesus told these people that if they came to Him for salvation, they would soon receive the gift of the Holy Spirit in a way that had never been before even thought of.  This would happen after Jesus had ascended into heaven (Acts 2:17, 33) and had taken His seat at the Father’s right hand in glory. (John 16:7; Ephesians 4:8)

The gift of the Holy Spirit is promised under the New Testament; not simply, as if it was absolutely wanting in the old church (against the declaration of these passages, Pss. 51:11, 12; 143:10; Is. 44:3; 59:21; Ezk. 36:27; 39:29; Hag. 2:5), but relatively, inasmuch as it was dispensed both more sparingly and to fewer persons and, as it were, drop by drop. Now it flows in great abundance and like a river inundates the whole church (Jn. 7:39). What was visibly begun on the day of Pentecost (Acts 2:17, 18) ought to be continued invisibly under the kingdom of Christ even until the consummation of the ages.  Institutes 2.205.

Stafford writes (p157):

Consider that the Holy Spirit is spoken of in some passages as if he had not been in the world before the day of Pentecost, which, of course, is not true. (John 7:39; 16:7; Acts 1:8.) But his coming on that day was so signal and his presence in the world from that time on was to be so potent that these passages seem to represent him as then coming into the world for the first time. It is relatively true, but, of course, not absolutely true, that democracy began with the Declaration of Independence by the colonies of America. The world had experienced flashes of it before but then it began in earnest to take the earth. Thus, too, did the kingdom of God begin in the time of the New Testament. So Paul explains to his philosophic hearers at Athens: “The times of ignorance therefore God overlooked (which does not mean that he took no account of men’s sins, but that he did not send forth a universal call for repentance); but now he commandeth men that they should all everywhere repent.” (Acts 17:30.)

 


John 7:40

Ἐκ τοῦ ὄχλου οὖν, ἀκούσαντες τῶν λόγων τούτων, ἔλεγον Οὗτός ἐστιν ἀληθῶς ὁ προφήτης.

Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Χριστός. Οἱ δὲ ἔλεγον, Μὴ γὰρ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας ὁ Χριστὸς ἔρχεται;

 

John 7:42

οὐχ ἡ γραφὴ εἶπεν ὅτι ἐκ τοῦ σπέρματος Δαυὶδ καὶ ἀπὸ Βηθλεὲμ, τῆς κώμης ὅπου ἦν Δαυὶδ, ἔρχεται ὁ Χριστός;

 

John 7:43

Σχίσμα οὖν ἐγένετο ἐν τῷ ὄχλῳ δι’ αὐτόν.

τινὲς δὲ ἤθελον ἐξ αὐτῶν πιάσαι αὐτόν, ἀλλ’ οὐδεὶς ἐπέβαλεν ἐπ’ αὐτὸν τὰς χεῖρας.

Ἦλθον οὖν οἱ ὑπηρέται πρὸς τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ Φαρισαίους, καὶ εἶπον αὐτοῖς ἐκεῖνοι, Διὰ τί οὐκ ἠγάγετε αὐτόν;

John 7:46

Ἀπεκρίθησαν οἱ ὑπηρέται, Οὐδέποτε ἐλάλησεν οὕτως ἄνθρωπος, 〈ὡς οὗτος λαλεῖ ὁ ἄνθρωπος〉.

John 7:47

Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν αὐτοῖς οἱ Φαρισαῖοι, Μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς πεπλάνησθε;

John 7:48

μή τις ἐκ τῶν ἀρχόντων ἐπίστευσεν εἰς αὐτὸν, ἢ ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων;

John 7:49

ἀλλὰ ὁ ὄχλος οὗτος, ὁ μὴ γινώσκων τὸν νόμον, ἐπάρατοί εἰσιν.

John 7:50

Λέγει Νικόδημος πρὸς αὐτούς, ὁ ἐλθὼν πρὸς αὐτὸν, [τὸ] πρότερον εἷς ὢν ἐξ αὐτῶν,

John 7:51

Μὴ ὁ νόμος ἡμῶν κρίνει τὸν ἄνθρωπον, ἐὰν μὴ ἀκούσῃ πρῶτον παρ’ αὐτοῦ καὶ γνῷ τί ποιεῖ;

John 7:52

Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας εἶ; ἐραύνησον καὶ ἴδε ὅτι ἐκ τῆς Γαλιλαίας προφήτης οὐκ ἐγείρεται.

John 7:53

Καὶ ἐπορεύθησαν* ἕκαστος εἰς τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.
