Exodus 19

Exodus 19:1

In the third month, when the sons of Israel were going out from the land of Egypt; in this day, they entered the wilderness of Sinai.

Paraphrase:  Israel was now nearing three months since they had left Egypt.  On the first day of this month, they arrived at the wilderness of Sinai.

Stanley, Palmer, and Schaff tell the story of their travels through this region.

Exodus 19:2

and they left from Rephidim, and they entered the wilderness of Sinai, and they made camp in the wilderness, and Israel made camp there before the mountain.

Paraphrase:  They had travelled all the way from Rephidim and had finally arrived in the Sinai wilderness.  Here they came to the mountain of God (Exodus 3:1; 4:27) where they made camp before the mountain.

Exodus 19:3

Then Moses went up to God, and YHWH called to him from the mountain saying, “Thus you will say to the house of Jacob and reveal to the sons of Israel.

Paraphrase:  Then YHWH called to Moses, and Moses climbed the mountain to speak with God.  “This is what I want you to tell My people, the sons of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.” YHWH said.

Exodus 19:4

You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and I carried you on the wings of eagles and I brought you to Myself.

Paraphrase:  “I am YHWH, your Great King.  You all remember what I did to deliver you from the hand of the Egyptians; how I sent the ten plagues to wreck their country and to make them eager to send you away.  You remember how I opened up a way through the Red Sea so that you could escape them when they tried to force you back under their heel.  You remember how I drowned them in the same sea.  I have done what the eagles do.  You have seen how tenderly they care for their young and how they carry them on their wings to prevent them from falling to their death.  This is what I have done for you; I have carried you on eagles wings, made you My people, and now I have brought you to My holy mountain.

See Thompson’s eye-witness account (p173) of these eagles.

Exodus 19:5

And now if you will seriously listen to My Voice and keep My covenant, then you will be for Me a treasure from all the peoples that are to Me on all the earth.

Paraphrase:  Listen carefully.  I am about to make a covenant with you here on this mountain, and you must know what I am expecting from you as your part of the bargain.  I am going to lay out for you exactly how I intend for you to live.  I will make it clear how you are to worship Me, how you are to live in relation to your spouse, your families, the entire nation and even the peoples who live around you.  I will spell out in detail what you are to do when you fail in any of these matters and how you can make amends.  Your responsibility is to study and understand these laws and to make a sincere effort to walk in them carefully observing all that I command you.  If you do this, then I make a solemn promise to you that I will make you My special people.  Out of all the peoples on earth, you will be My special treasure, My cherished possession.  I will lead you, provide for you and protect you all the days of your life.

The LXX “μοι λαὸς περιούσιος”

The preposition min can have a comparative meaning but cf Gesenius §119w.

Exodus 19:6

and you will be for Me a kingdom of priests and a nation of holy people.”  These are the words which you will speak to the sons of Israel.

Paraphrase:  Then you will be a holy nation, a people set apart by Me for a mission.  That mission is for you to be priests for Me to all the peoples of this world.  You are to make the peoples of this world understand that blessing can only be found in Me.

Comments:

How are we to understand the construct in מַמְלֶכֶת כֹּהֲנִים?  This is the fulfillment of God’s promise to Abram in Genesis 12:3; see here.  Edersheim writes (p109):

Thus the final object of the royal priesthood of Israel were those nations, from among whom God had chosen His people for a precious possession. Towards them Israel was to act as priests. For, just as the priest is the intermediary between God and man, so Israel was to be the intermediary of the knowledge and salvation of God to all nations. And this their priesthood was to be the foundation of their royalty.

Kalisch (p245):

The Israelites should be among the other nations, what the priests are in one nation; they were selected to propagate the doctrine of God, and thus to become the teachers and prophets of the nations. The priests form, in many respects, the medium between God and the people; they “bring the people to God” (cf Exodus 19:4); and thus it was the grand vocation of Israel to be the medium between the nations of the earth and God, to bring all the nations to God, and thus ultimately to form one whole with the rest of the world, to cease to be a chosen people, because they had made the truth of God a common property of mankind.
