Galatians 3

Galatians 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6

Gal 3:1

Ὦ ἀνόητοι Γαλάται! τίς ὑμᾶς ἐβάσκανεν, οἷς κατ’ ὀφθαλμοὺς Ἰησοῦς Χριστὸς προεγράφη ἐσταυρωμένος;

Gal 3:2

τοῦτο μόνον θέλω μαθεῖν ἀφ’ ὑμῶν, ἐξ ἔργων νόμου τὸ Πνεῦμα ἐλάβετε, ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

Gal 3:3

Οὕτως ἀνόητοί ἐστε; ἐναρξάμενοι Πνεύματι, νῦν σαρκὶ ἐπιτελεῖσθε;

Gal 3:4

τοσαῦτα ἐπάθετε εἰκῇ, εἴ γε καὶ εἰκῇ;

Gal 3:5

ὁ οὖν ἐπιχορηγῶν ὑμῖν τὸ Πνεῦμα καὶ ἐνεργῶν δυνάμεις ἐν ὑμῖν, ἐξ ἔργων νόμου ἢ ἐξ ἀκοῆς πίστεως;

Gal 3:6

Even as Abraham believed God, and it was reckoned to him for a righteousness.

Paraphrase: Now consider Abraham since he is the normative pattern for how people are justified. What does the Bible say about his justification? In Genesis 15, we read that he believed in God and that at the moment when he exercised this faith, he was given a perfect righteousness (Gen 15:6) which immediately brought him out of a state of guilt and into a state of being right with God.

Gal 3:7

Know therefore that the ones by faith, these are the sons of Abraham.

Paraphrase: Now we learn two lessons from this. First, there is a law-way of justification and a faith-way, and Abraham represents the faith-way. This means that all those who follow this method of justification are the real children of Abraham. I know that the ethnic Jews pride themselves on being children of Abraham, but they delude themselves. They are not seeking to be right with God in the way Abraham did. They are still clinging to the law-way. (Rom 9:32)

Comments:

οἱ is an orphan article.

Gal 3:8

but the Scripture, seeing before that by faith God would justify the Gentiles, proclaimed the gospel to Abraham before, “All nations will be blessed in you.”

Paraphrase: The second lesson is this. This faith-way of being justified is not something that I invented. On the contrary, God Himself taught us this when He gave Abraham the promise that all nations would be blessed in him. (Gen 12:3) Now how was it that all the Gentile nations could be blessed in just this one man? Because the same gospel that God preached to Abraham, He now preaches to the Gentiles nations as well. This is the good news; you citizens of Antioch, Iconium, Lystra, and Derbe can be justified before God on the same basis as Abraham the Jew.

Gal 3:9

so that the by faith ones are blessed with faithful Abraham.

Paraphrase: The glorious result is that you Gentile people, no matter what sins you may have committed in the past, can now stand before God on the same ground as father Abraham. How? By the faith-way of justification. Some of you are trying so hard to be Jewish but why? What’s the point of circumcision? It does nothing for you. When you put your hand in Jesus’ hand (which is the faith-way of justification), you stand on the same ground as the very father of the Jews. You can’t get any more “Jewish” than that.

Gal 3:10

For as many as are of the works of the law, they are under a curse. For it is written: “A curse on all who are not true to all what is written in the book of the law to do them.

Paraphrase: In spite of this, some of you still think you can be justified by the law-way. Now learn this; all those who choose this way are under a curse. Scripture teaches this in Deuteronomy: “A curse rests on all those who do not render to God a perfect, personal, and perpetual obedience to His law. (Deut 27:26)

Comments:

The language of “personal, perpetual, and perfect” comes from the Westminster Larger catechism

Q20. What was the providence of God toward man in the estate in which he was created? Answer: The providence of God toward man in the estate in which he was created, was the placing him in paradise, appointing him to dress it, giving him liberty to eat of the fruit of the earth; putting the creatures under his dominion, and ordaining marriage for his help; affording him communion with himself; instituting the Sabbath; entering into a covenant of life with him, upon condition of personal, perfect, and perpetual obedience, of which the tree of life was a pledge; and forbidding to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, upon the pain of death.

ποιῆσαι is an articular infinitive showing purpose; see §397 in Burton.

Gal 3:11

now that by the law no one is justified before God is clear because, “The just by faith will live.”

Paraphrase: There are other places where Scripture teaches the same thing. The law-way of justification just doesn’t work. Consider what Habakkuk says, וְצַדִּיק בֶּאֱמוּנָתוֹ יִחְיֶה or “Those who are right with God got that way by faith.”

Comments:

Gal 3:12

but the law is not of faith, but the one who is doing them will live by them.

Paraphrase: Now if we get right with God by faith as Habakkuk teaches, then it cannot be by the law-way. The reason is is because the law-way of justification is the very opposite of the faith-way. In fact, where the law-way is, there the faith-way is entirely excluded.  These two ways of justification are mutually exclusive.  There can be nothing of the law-way in a person that is justified by the faith-way. There is either the one or the other, never both.

Gal 3:13

Comments:

When we read that the law was “received by the ministration of angels” (Acts 7:53; Galatinas 3:19; Hebrews 2:2), we are not to understand by it that God Himself did not speak all these words, but either to refer it to those “ten thousands” of angels who were His attendants when He spake on Sinai (Deut. 33:2; Ps. 68:17); or, more probably, to the difference between the Old and the New Testament dispensations. In the former, the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity appeared only in the Angel of the Covenant; in the latter, He became incarnate in the Person of Jesus Christ, the God-Man.  source

Gal 3:20
