When αυτος is in predicate position and usually nominative, it can function as an intensive pronoun. cf. BBG 12.9-10; GGBB p349:
αὐτὸς γὰρ Ἰησοῦς ἐμαρτύρησεν ὅτι προφήτης ἐν τῇ ἰδίᾳ πατρίδι τιμὴν οὐκ ἔχει. (John 4:44)

αὐτὸς ὁ ἀνήρ or ὁ ἀνὴρ αὐτός = the man himself
