ketiv

Ketiv (כְּתִיב) Qere (קְרֵי) readings are alternate wordings of certain texts in the Hebrew Bible.  The Masoretes did this both to preserve the original text but also to provide readings which they felt were to be preferred.  The ketiv reading is what was originally written; the qere reading is the Masoretes’ preferred reading.  See more here.
