1 Peter 3:1

Ὁμοίως γυναῖκες ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν, ἵνα καὶ εἴ τινες ἀπειθοῦσιν τῷ λόγῳ διὰ τῆς τῶν γυναικῶν ἀναστροφῆς ἄνευ λόγου κερδηθήσονται

1 Peter 3:2

ἐποπτεύσαντες τὴν ἐν φόβῳ ἁγνὴν ἀναστροφὴν ὑμῶν.

1 Peter 3:3

ὧν ἔστω οὐχ ὁ ἔξωθεν ἐμπλοκῆς τριχῶν καὶ περιθέσεως χρυσίων ἢ ἐνδύσεως ἱματίων κόσμος,

1 Peter 3:4

ἀλλ’ ὁ κρυπτὸς τῆς καρδίας ἄνθρωπος ἐν τῷ ἀφθάρτῳ τοῦ πραέως καὶ ἡσυχίου πνεύματος, ὅ ἐστιν ἐνώπιον τοῦ θεοῦ πολυτελές.

1 Peter 3:5

οὕτως γάρ ποτε καὶ αἱ ἅγιαι γυναῖκες αἱ ἐλπίζουσαι εἰς θεὸν ἐκόσμουν ἑαυτάς, ὑποτασσόμεναι τοῖς ἰδίοις ἀνδράσιν,

1 Peter 3:6

ὡς Σάρρα ὑπήκουσεν τῷ Ἀβραάμ, κύριον αὐτὸν καλοῦσα· ἧς ἐγενήθητε τέκνα ἀγαθοποιοῦσαι καὶ μὴ φοβούμεναι μηδεμίαν πτόησιν.

1 Peter 3:7

Οἱ ἄνδρες ὁμοίως συνοικοῦντες κατὰ γνῶσιν, ὡς ἀσθενεστέρῳ σκεύει τῷ γυναικείῳ ἀπονέμοντες τιμήν, ὡς καὶ συγκληρονόμοις χάριτος ζωῆς, εἰς τὸ μὴ ἐγκόπτεσθαι τὰς προσευχὰς ὑμῶν.

1 Peter 3:8

Τὸ δὲ τέλος πάντες ὁμόφρονες, συμπαθεῖς, φιλάδελφοι, εὔσπλαγχνοι, ταπεινόφρονες,

1 Peter 3:9

μὴ ἀποδιδόντες κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ ἢ λοιδορίαν ἀντὶ λοιδορίας τοὐναντίον δὲ εὐλογοῦντες, ὅτι εἰς τοῦτο ἐκλήθητε ἵνα εὐλογίαν κληρονομήσητε.

1 Peter 3:10

ὁ γὰρ θέλων ζωὴν ἀγαπᾶν καὶ ἰδεῖν ἡμέρας ἀγαθὰς παυσάτω τὴν γλῶσσαν ἀπὸ κακοῦ καὶ χείλη τοῦ μὴ λαλῆσαι δόλον,

1 Peter 3:11

ἐκκλινάτω δὲ ἀπὸ κακοῦ καὶ ποιησάτω ἀγαθόν, ζητησάτω εἰρήνην καὶ διωξάτω αὐτήν·

1 Peter 3:12

ὅτι ὀφθαλμοὶ κυρίου ἐπὶ δικαίους καὶ ὦτα αὐτοῦ εἰς δέησιν αὐτῶν, πρόσωπον δὲ κυρίου ἐπὶ ποιοῦντας κακά.

1 Peter 3:13

Καὶ τίς ὁ κακώσων ὑμᾶς ἐὰν τοῦ ἀγαθοῦ ζηλωταὶ γένησθε;

 


1 Peter 3:14

ἀλλ’ εἰ καὶ πάσχοιτε διὰ δικαιοσύνην, μακάριοι. τὸν δὲ φόβον αὐτῶν μὴ φοβηθῆτε μηδὲ ταραχθῆτε,

but if even you suffer on account of righteousness, blessed; and do not fear their fear, neither be troubled.

Paraphrase:  But even if you do end up suffering painful trials, you are blessed.  Remember what the prophet Isaiah said, “You are not to say, ‘It is a conspiracy!’ In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy, And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it.  It is the LORD of hosts whom you should regard as holy, and He shall be your fear, and He shall be your dread.” (Isaiah 8:12-13)  Don’t think that just because you are suffering so many things that God is angry with you or that He has abandoned you. (Matthew 28:20; Hebrews 13:5)

Comments:

The dipthong in πάσχοιτε is a dead giveaway for the optative.

 


1 Peter 3:15

κύριον δὲ τὸν Χριστὸν ἁγιάσατε ἐν ταῖς καρδίαις ὑμῶν, ἕτοιμοι ἀεὶ πρὸς ἀπολογίαν παντὶ τῷ αἰτοῦντι ὑμᾶς λόγον περὶ τῆς ἐν ὑμῖν ἐλπίδος,

But sanctify the Lord Christ in your hearts, being ready always for a defense to those who are asking you a word concerning the hope in you.

Paraphrase:  So you should fear God and not man.  At the same time, see the holiness and transcendence of our Savior, Jesus Christ.  “He is Lord” was the good confession you made when you were first baptized and received into the kingdom of God.  Now live your life as one who really believes it.  When people come asking why you believe the way you do, don’t just dismiss them or pass them by.  Take the opportunity to show them the glorious hope which is yours by faith in Jesus.  Give them a good reason for abandoning their own miserable way of life and for coming to the same confession as you.

1 Peter 3:16

ἀλλὰ μετὰ πραΰτητος καὶ φόβου, συνείδησιν ἔχοντες ἀγαθήν, ἵνα ἐν ᾧ καταλαλεῖσθε καταισχυνθῶσιν οἱ ἐπηρεάζοντες ὑμῶν τὴν ἀγαθὴν ἐν Χριστῷ ἀναστροφήν.

but with meekness and fear, having a good conscience, in order that in what you are accused, they might be ashamed who are slandering your good conversation in Christ.

Paraphrase:  Be sure you give your reasons with a humble and meek spirit.  Don’t defend your faith as if you are tryin to win a victory or to crush your opponent.  You need to do this with a clear conscience but how can you have a clear conscience if you adopt the same tactics that many of them use against us?  We want to approach them with a humble and loving approach.  We want to approach unbelievers with the same compassion that was in our Savior who said, “Forgive them   By doing this, we will make clear to them that we have a deep concern for them and that we are not trying to crush them or to ridicule them for their folly.  We want them to be ashamed for slandering us and to see that we have nothing but a sincere love for their eternal well-being.

1 Peter 3:17

κρεῖττον γὰρ ἀγαθοποιοῦντας, εἰ θέλοι τὸ θέλημα τοῦ θεοῦ, πάσχειν ἢ κακοποιοῦντας.

For it is better to suffer well-doing if the will of God wills than evil-doing.

Paraphrase:  Never forget that if God chooses to have us suffer for doing good things, that is far better than living a life of ease and pleasure while we are busy doing evil.

1 Peter 3:18

ὅτι καὶ Χριστὸς ἅπαξ περὶ ἁμαρτιῶν ἔπαθεν, δίκαιος ὑπὲρ ἀδίκων, ἵνα ὑμᾶς προσαγάγῃ τῷ θεῷ, θανατωθεὶς μὲν σαρκὶ ζῳοποιηθεὶς δὲ πνεύματι·

because even Christ once for all suffered for sins the just in place of the unjust in order that He might lead you to God being killed by flesh, but coming to life by the Spirit. 

Paraphrase:  Furthermore, recall that our Savior Himself suffered very severely and not for any sin which He had committed.  On the contrary, He gave His life as a one time, never to be repeated sacrifice, a substitution of the innocent in place of the guilty.  This He did so that He might be faithful to the covenant which the Father had made with Him before all time; namely that He would reconcile you to His Father by taking their place on the cross and being brought back to life by the power of the Holy Spirit and coming out of the grave in triumph.

1 Peter 3:19

ἐν ᾧ καὶ τοῖς ἐν φυλακῇ πνεύμασιν πορευθεὶς ἐκήρυξεν,

by Whom, He preached even to those spirits in prison, 

Paraphrase:  By this same Spirit, Jesus was able to go and preach the gospel of His victory over death to those ??

1 Peter 3:20

ἀπειθήσασίν ποτε ὅτε ἀπεξεδέχετο ἡ τοῦ θεοῦ μακροθυμία ἐν ἡμέραις Νῶε κατασκευαζομένης κιβωτοῦ εἰς ἣν ὀλίγοι, τοῦτ’ ἔστιν ὀκτὼ ψυχαί, διεσώθησαν δι’ ὕδατος.

they were disobedient at one time when the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah constructing an ark into which a few, this is eight souls, were rescued by water.

Paraphrase:  Unfortunately, these spirits(?) did not believe the gospel which Jesus preached to them and therefore they were locked away in prison.  This all happened in the time of Noah when he was busy building the ark.  Recall that it was in this ark, that eight souls were saved from drowning in the flood waters.

1 Peter 3:21

ὃ καὶ ὑμᾶς ἀντίτυπον νῦν σῴζει βάπτισμα, οὐ σαρκὸς ἀπόθεσις ῥύπου ἀλλὰ συνειδήσεως ἀγαθῆς ἐπερώτημα εἰς θεόν, δι’ ἀναστάσεως Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,

which antitype even you now saves, baptism not the laying aside the filth of the flesh but a good conscience request to God through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.

Paraphrase:  Now the waters of the flood are a type, and baptism is the corresponding antitype.  Just as the water saved Noah and his family, so baptism also saves us from being condemned under the wrath of a just God for our sin.  Of course, I don’t mean that the visible sign of washing with water does anything to save us.  That is only a visible sign of an invisible reality.  It’s a sincere cry to God out of a sense of shame for our sin and an earnest desire to be cleansed from guilt which saves us.  This cry of faith which takes hold of the cross of Christ and His victory by the resurrection is what really saves us from judgment.

Comments:

I take the “good conscience” here to be synonymous with sincere (1 Timothy 1:5) and the “request” to be faith. (Luke 18:3)  In other words, it’s not physical baptism that saves but a sincere crying out to God trusting to the finished work of Christ.

Edwards:  This can be understood in no other sense than that water was the means of their salvation. That which was the instrument of the destruction of the old world was the instrument of the salvation of the church, for thereby it was saved from that deluge of wickedness that was likely to overflow it; but the water washed away that wickedness and filthiness, and delivered them. So the children of Israel were baptized in the Red Sea, and they were saved by water. The water washed away their wicked, filthy enemies that were ready to swallow ’em up, and set them at liberty (1 Cor. 10:2).

 


1 Peter 3:22

ὅς ἐστιν ἐν δεξιᾷ θεοῦ πορευθεὶς εἰς οὐρανὸν ὑποταγέντων αὐτῷ ἀγγέλων καὶ ἐξουσιῶν καὶ δυνάμεων.

Who is at the right of God having gone to heaven subordinating to him angels and authorities and powers. 

Paraphrase:  This Jesus has now ascended on high to the right hand of His Father where He awaits the day when all powers in heaven and earth will be brought under subjection (1 Corinthians 15:24) and His Father will have the full supremacy again. (1 Corinthians 15:28)
