John 9:1
Καὶ παράγων, εἶδεν ἄνθρωπον τυφλὸν ἐκ γενετῆς.
John 9:2
καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτὸν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ λέγοντες, Ῥαββί, τίς ἥμαρτεν, οὗτος ἢ οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ, ἵνα τυφλὸς γεννηθῇ;

Ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς, Οὔτε οὗτος ἥμαρτεν, οὔτε οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ· ἀλλ’ ἵνα φανερωθῇ τὰ ἔργα τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐν αὐτῷ.
John 9:4
ἡμᾶς δεῖ ἐργάζεσθαι τὰ ἔργα τοῦ πέμψαντός με, ἕως ἡμέρα ἐστίν· ἔρχεται νὺξ, ὅτε οὐδεὶς δύναται ἐργάζεσθαι.
John 9:5
ὅταν ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ ὦ, φῶς εἰμι τοῦ κόσμου.
John 9:6 Ταῦτα εἰπὼν, ἔπτυσεν χαμαὶ, καὶ ἐποίησεν πηλὸν ἐκ τοῦ πτύσματος, καὶ ἐπέχρισεν* αὐτοῦ τὸν πηλὸν ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
John 9:7 καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Ὕπαγε, νίψαι εἰς τὴν κολυμβήθραν τοῦ Σιλωάμ, ὃ ἑρμηνεύεται Ἀπεσταλμένος. ἀπῆλθεν οὖν καὶ ἐνίψατο, καὶ ἦλθεν βλέπων.
John 9:8 Οἱ οὖν γείτονες καὶ οἱ θεωροῦντες αὐτὸν τὸ πρότερον, ὅτι προσαίτης ἦν, ἔλεγον, Οὐχ οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ καθήμενος καὶ προσαιτῶν;
John 9:9 Ἄλλοι ἔλεγον ὅτι, Οὗτός ἐστιν, ἄλλοι ἔλεγον, Οὐχί, ἀλλὰ ὅμοιος αὐτῷ ἐστιν. Ἐκεῖνος ἔλεγεν ὅτι, Ἐγώ εἰμι.
John 9:10 Ἔλεγον οὖν αὐτῷ, Πῶς οὖν ἠνεῴχθησάν σου οἱ ὀφθαλμοί;
John 9:11 Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος, Ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ λεγόμενος Ἰησοῦς πηλὸν ἐποίησεν, καὶ ἐπέχρισέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς, καὶ εἶπέν μοι ὅτι, Ὕπαγε εἰς τὸν Σιλωὰμ καὶ νίψαι. ἀπελθὼν οὖν καὶ νιψάμενος, ἀνέβλεψα.
John 9:12 Καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Ποῦ ἐστιν ἐκεῖνος; Λέγει, Οὐκ οἶδα.
John 9:13 Ἄγουσιν αὐτὸν πρὸς τοὺς Φαρισαίους τόν ποτε τυφλόν.
John 9:14 ἦν δὲ σάββατον ἐν ᾗ ἡμέρᾳ τὸν πηλὸν ἐποίησεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ ἀνέῳξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
John 9:15 πάλιν οὖν ἠρώτων αὐτὸν καὶ οἱ Φαρισαῖοι πῶς ἀνέβλεψεν. Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Πηλὸν ἐπέθηκέν μου ἐπὶ τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς, καὶ ἐνιψάμην, καὶ βλέπω.
John 9:16 Ἔλεγον οὖν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων τινές, Οὐκ ἔστιν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ ὁ ἄνθρωπος, ὅτι τὸ σάββατον οὐ τηρεῖ. Ἄλλοι [δὲ] ἔλεγον, Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλὸς τοιαῦτα σημεῖα ποιεῖν; Καὶ σχίσμα ἦν ἐν αὐτοῖς.
John 9:17 λέγουσιν οὖν τῷ τυφλῷ πάλιν, Τί σὺ λέγεις περὶ αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς; Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν ὅτι, Προφήτης ἐστίν.
John 9:18 Οὐκ ἐπίστευσαν οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι περὶ αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἦν τυφλὸς καὶ ἀνέβλεψεν, ἕως ὅτου ἐφώνησαν τοὺς γονεῖς αὐτοῦ τοῦ ἀναβλέψαντος.
John 9:19 καὶ ἠρώτησαν αὐτοὺς λέγοντες, Οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ὑμῶν, ὃν ὑμεῖς λέγετε ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη; πῶς οὖν βλέπει ἄρτι;
John 9:20
Ἀπεκρίθησαν οὖν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ καὶ εἶπαν, Οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ υἱὸς ἡμῶν, καὶ ὅτι τυφλὸς ἐγεννήθη.

πῶς δὲ νῦν βλέπει, οὐκ οἴδαμεν, ἢ τίς ἤνοιξεν αὐτοῦ τοὺς ὀφθαλμοὺς, ἡμεῖς οὐκ οἴδαμεν· αὐτὸν ἐρωτήσατε· ἡλικίαν ἔχει αὐτὸς. περὶ ἑαυτοῦ, λαλήσει.
John 9:22
Ταῦτα εἶπαν οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ ὅτι ἐφοβοῦντο τοὺς Ἰουδαίους· ἤδη γὰρ συνετέθειντο οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι ἵνα ἐάν τις αὐτὸν ὁμολογήσῃ Χριστόν, ἀποσυνάγωγος γένηται.
John 9:23
διὰ τοῦτο, οἱ γονεῖς αὐτοῦ εἶπαν ὅτι, Ἡλικίαν ἔχει· αὐτὸν ἐπερωτήσατε.
John 9:24
Ἐφώνησαν οὖν τὸν ἄνθρωπον ἐκ δευτέρου ὃς ἦν τυφλὸς, καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Δὸς δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ! ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι οὗτος ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν.
John 9:25
Ἀπεκρίθη οὖν ἐκεῖνος, Εἰ ἁμαρτωλός ἐστιν, οὐκ οἶδα. ἓν οἶδα, ὅτι τυφλὸς ὢν, ἄρτι βλέπω.
John 9:26
Εἶπον* οὖν αὐτῷ, Τί ἐποίησέν σοι; πῶς ἤνοιξέν σου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς;
John 9:27
Ἀπεκρίθη αὐτοῖς, Εἶπον ὑμῖν ἤδη, καὶ οὐκ ἠκούσατε. τί πάλιν θέλετε ἀκούειν; μὴ καὶ ὑμεῖς θέλετε αὐτοῦ μαθηταὶ γενέσθαι;
John 9:28
Καὶ ἐλοιδόρησαν αὐτὸν καὶ εἶπον*, Σὺ μαθητὴς εἶ ἐκείνου· ἡμεῖς δὲ τοῦ Μωϋσέως ἐσμὲν μαθηταί.
John 9:29
ἡμεῖς οἴδαμεν ὅτι Μωϋσεῖ λελάληκεν ὁ Θεός· τοῦτον δὲ οὐκ οἴδαμεν πόθεν ἐστίν.
John 9:30
Ἀπεκρίθη ὁ ἄνθρωπος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτοῖς, Ἐν τούτῳ γὰρ τὸ θαυμαστόν ἐστιν, ὅτι ὑμεῖς οὐκ οἴδατε πόθεν ἐστίν, καὶ ἤνοιξέν μου τοὺς ὀφθαλμούς.
John 9:31
οἴδαμεν ὅτι «ὁ Θεὸς» ἁμαρτωλῶν οὐκ ἀκούει· ἀλλ’ ἐάν τις θεοσεβὴς ᾖ, καὶ τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ ποιῇ, τούτου ἀκούει.
John 9:32
ἐκ τοῦ αἰῶνος οὐκ ἠκούσθη, ὅτι ἠνέῳξέν τις ὀφθαλμοὺς τυφλοῦ γεγεννημένου.
John 9:33
εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος παρὰ Θεοῦ, οὐκ ἠδύνατο ποιεῖν οὐδέν.
John 9:34
Ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ, Ἐν ἁμαρτίαις σὺ ἐγεννήθης ὅλος, καὶ σὺ διδάσκεις ἡμᾶς; καὶ ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω.
John 9:35
Ἤκουσεν Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ἐξέβαλον αὐτὸν ἔξω, καὶ εὑρὼν αὐτὸν, εἶπεν, Σὺ πιστεύεις εἰς τὸν Υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου;
Jesus heard that they threw him outside; and finding him, he said, “Are you believing in the Son of Man?”
Paraphrase: After some time had passed, Jesus heard the news that the Sanhedrin had excommunicated (John 9:22; 12:42; 16:2) the man who had been healed from his blindness. Jesus, moved with compassion (Luke 15:4), sought out the man and found him. “Good morning, My friend. I am sorry to hear of all your distress in being turned out of the synagogue. Let me encourage you with this; yes, you have been rejected by the leaders of our religion, but what do you think about the Son of Man? The Great King of whom the prophet Daniel spoke who will setup an everlasting kingdom? (Daniel 7:13-14) Are you looking for His coming? After all, even if you are rejected by the most important leaders of our day, if you are a disciple of this coming King, then you are completely safe. No harm can come to you. Earlier, you said that the Man who healed you was a prophet. (John 9:17) Do you believe that He is the Great Prophet of whom Moses spoke? (Deuteronomy 18:18; Acts 3:22; 7:37) And if He is that prophet, then I must ask you: are you following His teachings closely and believing every word that He speaks? (Matthew 16:13; Mark 8:27)

John 9:36
Ἀπεκρίθη ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν, Καὶ τίς ἐστιν, Κύριε, ἵνα πιστεύσω εἰς αὐτόν;
That man answered and said, “And who is [He], Lord, in order that I might believe in Him?”
Paraphrase: “I surely do believe in this Great King but has He already come?” the man asked. “Are you trying to tell me that the One who healed me is the Great Messiah of God’s people? If so, please tell me where He is. I will become His disciple; I will follow Him and will hold all that He teaches to be the perfect truth.”
Comments:
Note the position of και in this verse and the following. It is not a conjunction here but an adverb. “The initial και is emphatic and thus reinforces the statement. It is not a coordinating conjunction but an adverb, frequently in the papyri having the sense of “really, truly, certainly.” Spicq, Theological Lexicon of the New Testament, 2:584 (footnote #8).
John 9:37
Εἶπεν αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Καὶ ἑώρακας αὐτὸν, καὶ ὁ λαλῶν μετὰ σοῦ ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν.
Jesus said to him, “You have even seen Him, and the One speaking with you, that One is [he].”
Paraphrase: Then Jesus took the man by the hand and said, “Yes, exactly! You have already met the Great Messiah who God has sent for the salvation of His people. You have seen Him, and He is the One who healed you and gave you back your sight. In fact, you are speaking with Him right at this very moment!“

Ὁ δὲ ἔφη, Πιστεύω, Κύριε. καὶ προσεκύνησεν αὐτῷ.
Then he said, “I believe, Lord!” And he worshipped Him.
Paraphrase: Then the man fell on his face before Jesus and cried out, “I do believe, Lord, that You are the Son of Man and that Prophet of whom Moses spoke. From this day forward, I turn my back on all other religious teachers. I will follow You and You alone. Clearly, you are the Light of the world and the Savior of sinners.” (John 9:5; 4:42)

John 9:39
Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Εἰς κρίμα ἐγὼ εἰς τὸν κόσμον τοῦτον ἦλθον, ἵνα οἱ μὴ βλέποντες βλέπωσιν· καὶ οἱ βλέποντες, τυφλοὶ γένωνται.
And Jesus said, “For judgment I came into this world in order that those not seeing, might see and those seeing, might become blind.”
Paraphrase: Then Jesus lifted the man to his feet, and they began to walk together with several others following along and listening in. “Listen,” Jesus said, “This is one of the reasons I came to this earth. I came to set this earth on fire and thereby to make a separation between those whom My Father has chosen and loved from before the foundation of the world and those whom He has left to themselves. (Luke 12:49-53) Those persons who own the fact that they are living in darkness (John 1:5) and that they cannot know anything unless it be taught them from God (John 3:27), these are the ones who I came to teach. Such ones will come to Me and will learn from Me just as Zacchaeus (Luke 19:9) and Nicodemus did. (John 3:14-16) They will be taught the truth about God, the truth about themselves, and the truth about where salvation is to be found. On the other hand, there are those persons who pride themselves on their accurate knowledge of the truth and who scoff at others for being so unlearned and uneducated. They do not think they live in darkness; they think their own mind, their own reason, and their own traditions are all they need. I came for these persons too, but not to teach them but to further blind them in their ignorance and folly. (2 Thessalonians 2:11) This is their punishment (Isaiah 6:9-10; Matthew 13:10-17) for their refusal to recognize their need for the light that comes from My Father and through Me. (John 3:19; 8:12; 12:35; 12:46)

See Bunyan’s comments on judicial hardening (top of left column p77): Barren fig-tree, hearken, judicial hardening is dreadful! There is a difference betwixt that hardness of heart that is incident to all men, and that which comes upon some as a signal or special judgment of God. And although all kinds of hardness of heart, in some sense may be called a judgment, yet to be hardened with this second kind, is a judgment peculiar only to them that perish; hardness that is sent as a punishment for the abuse of light received, for a reward of apostacy.
Geikie (p138): Every movement which did not rise in the Rabbinical schools was suspected by the Rabbis and their disciples, and there were circumstances in that of Jesus, which were especially formidable. The superhuman powers He displayed could not be questioned, and the Rabbis could boast of nothing as imposing. They were falling into the shade. Respect was growing for Jesus among the people, in spite of them. His claims were daily urged more frankly, and the masses were disposed to assent to them. On His return to Capernaum He had cured a man who was blind, dumb, and mad, and possessed besides with a devil; and so astounding a miracle had raised the question, far and wide, whether, in spite of their former ideas, He were not the Son of David—the Messiah, after all. Men had, indeed, expected an outward political kingdom, with a blaze of miracle wrought on behalf of the nation at large, but they began to ask each other, “When the Christ cometh will He do more miracles than this man has done?” It could not be endured. The movement of John had just been crushed, and, now, in restless Galilee, one far more dangerous to the Jerusalem authorities was rapidly taking shape and consistence. It must be put down at any cost.
John 9:40
ἤκουσαν ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων ταῦτα, οἱ μετ’ αὐτοῦ ὄντες, καὶ εἶπον αὐτῷ, Μὴ καὶ ἡμεῖς τυφλοί ἐσμεν;
Those being with Him from the Pharisees heard these things and said, “Not even we are blind?”
Paraphrase: At this point, some of the Pharisees, who had been following Him, became indignant. “What’s this!” they demanded, “Surely we, who have studied Scripture from are youngest days, are not blind, are we? Are you implying that we who have been trained in the schools (John 7:15) are blind and will be punished with further blindness?!”

John 9:41
Εἶπεν αὐτοῖς ὁ Ἰησοῦς, Εἰ τυφλοὶ ἦτε, οὐκ ἂν εἴχετε ἁμαρτίαν· νῦν δὲ λέγετε ὅτι, Βλέπομεν, ἡ ἁμαρτία ὑμῶν μένει.
Jesus said to them, “If blind you were, then you do not have sin; but now, you say, “We see, your sin remains.”
Paraphrase: Jesus turned to them. “Look,” He said, “If you were really blind and ready to own this fact and to seek out better light, then what you are doing is not sinful. You are the very ones whom I came to show the way. (John 14:6) Actually, however, you are not blind; at least, you claim to be able to see. You claim to be the teachers of the people (Romans 2:20-21), but you refuse to acknowledge that you are in darkness and that you are in need of the teaching which I am giving. This just shows that you are still in your sin and that you will be punished with still deeper blindness.
