Luke 12

Luke 12:1

Luke 12:14

Ὁ δὲ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Ἄνθρωπε, τίς με κατέστησεν κριτὴν ἢ μεριστὴν ἐφ’ ὑμᾶς;

Luke 12:15

Luke 12:17

καὶ διελογίζετο ἐν ἑαυτῷ, λέγων, Τί ποιήσω, ὅτι οὐκ ἔχω ποῦ συνάξω τοὺς καρπούς μου;

Luke 12:18

Luke 12:20

Εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ Θεός, Ἄφρων! ταύτῃ τῇ νυκτὶ, τὴν ψυχήν σου ἀπαιτοῦσιν ἀπὸ σοῦ· ἃ δὲ ἡτοίμασας— τίνι ἔσται;

Luke 12:21

Luke 12:25

τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν, μεριμνῶν, δύναται ἐπὶ τὴν ἡλικίαν αὐτοῦ προσθεῖναι πῆχυν;

Luke 12:26

εἰ οὖν οὐδὲ ἐλάχιστον δύνασθε, τί περὶ τῶν λοιπῶν μεριμνᾶτε;

Luke 12:27

Luke 12:41

Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ Πέτρος, Κύριε, πρὸς ἡμᾶς τὴν παραβολὴν ταύτην λέγεις, ἢ καὶ πρὸς πάντας;

Luke 12:42

Καὶ εἶπεν ὁ Κύριος, Τίς ἄρα ἐστὶν ὁ πιστὸς οἰκονόμος ὁ φρόνιμος, ὃν καταστήσει ὁ κύριος ἐπὶ τῆς θεραπείας αὐτοῦ, τοῦ διδόναι ἐν καιρῷ τὸ σιτομέτριον;

Luke 12:43

A fire I came to hurl onto the earth and how I desire if already it be lit.

Paraphrase:  Having finished this lesson, Jesus sighed deeply.  “My dear children, I want to teach you something else about My mission.  I’ve taught you a great deal about the kingdom of God, but now there is something else for you to learn about it.  You need to know that one aspect of My mission is to light the world on fire.  Yes, it’s true; everything will burst into flame as if struck with lightning.  Oh how I wish this fire was already burning!

Comments:

For the options on this last clause, see Godet (p112).

Luke 12:50

But now I have a baptism to be baptized and how I am pressed until the time it is completed.

Paraphrase:  You may be wondering what this work is.  At the heart of My mission is a terrible baptism of suffering.  All the wrath (Galatians 3:13) of God’s justice will overwhelm Me just as water flows over a person when he is baptized.  Then, I will give My life as a sin offering, and this fire cannot be kindled until this sin offering has been made.  This is the great mandate which My Father gave Me and it weighs heavy on Me. (Mark 10:45; John 6:39-44)  How I wish that the hour had arrived when I could enter into this baptism and start this fire burning!  I wish it were already completed! (John 19:30)

Comments:

Most find here a reference to Jesus’ dread and anxiety about the sufferings He was about to enter.  Stier speaks (p33) of this as “a presentient foretaste of the final suffering, of that anxiety, now already begun, and which was to be consummated in such profound anguish.”  Certainly, this was a part of Jesus’ suffering (Luke 22:42), but I don’t find that thought here.  The thought here is more the impatience of Jesus to begin His work and to complete His Mission.

Luke 12:51

Do you think that peace I came to give on the earth?  No! I say to you but rather division.

Paraphrase:  Perhaps you think that I came to build a peaceful and prosperous kingdom ruled by Jews and oppressed by no one. (John 18:36)  Certainly not!  I did not come to establish such a kingdom but rather to bring division (Malachi 3:2, 3, 18; 4:1; Matthew 10:34; John 7:43; 9:39) and to force a separation between those people who are for Me and those who are against Me. (Joshua 24:15; Luke 2:34; Romans 9:32-33)

Comments:

Again, these words do not support the idea that Jesus was suffering anxiety about His future suffering.

The mission of Jesus is often described as bringing peace. (Luke 1:79; 2:14; 7:50; 8:48; 10:5–6; 19:38; Acts 10:36)  The prophets, on the other hand, speak of the Day of YHWH as being a day of judgment, not a happy day for God’s people. (Amos 5:16; Joel 1:15; 2:1–2, 11, 31; Isaiah 13:6)

Luke 12:52

For from now, five shall be in one house being divided; three against two; two against three.

Paraphrase:  I came to make a separation.  There will be five people in one family; but when My sufferings are complete and the fire is started, a separation will come in that family and many more like them. (Micah 7:6)  Three of the family members will begin to argue and quarrel with the other two.  The other two will hate and curse the other three.  Then it will become clear who are for Me and who against Me.

Luke 12:53

They will be divided father against son and son against father; mother against daughter and daughter against mother; mother-in-law against daughter-in-law and daughter-in-law against mother-in-law.

Paraphrase:  This separation will run right through family circles.  Fathers will oppose their sons and vice versa; mothers will hate their daughters and vice versa; mothers-in-law will look with contempt on their daughters-in-law and vice versa.

Luke 12:54

Luke 12:56

ὑποκριταί! τὸ πρόσωπον τῆς γῆς καὶ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν· τὸν καιρὸν δὲ τοῦτον, πῶς ‹οὐκ οἴδατε δοκιμάζειν›;

Luke 12:57

Τί δὲ καὶ ἀφ’ ἑαυτῶν οὐ κρίνετε τὸ δίκαιον;

Luke 12:58
