Luke 17

Luke 17:1

Luke 17:7

Τίς δὲ ἐξ ὑμῶν δοῦλον ἔχων, ἀροτριῶντα ἢ ποιμαίνοντα, ὃς εἰσελθόντι ἐκ τοῦ ἀγροῦ, ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ, Εὐθέως παρελθὼν, ἀνάπεσε;

Luke 17:8

ἀλλ’ οὐχὶ ἐρεῖ αὐτῷ, Ἑτοίμασον τί δειπνήσω, καὶ περιζωσάμενος, διακόνει μοι ἕως φάγω καὶ πίω· καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα φάγεσαι καὶ πίεσαι σύ;

Luke 17:9

μὴ ἔχει χάριν τῷ δούλῳ ὅτι ἐποίησεν τὰ διαταχθέντα;

Luke 17:10

Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ, ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν, Οὐχὶ* οἱ δέκα ἐκαθαρίσθησαν; οἱ δὲ ἐννέα ποῦ;

οὐχ εὑρέθησαν ὑποστρέψαντες δοῦναι δόξαν τῷ Θεῷ, εἰ μὴ ὁ ἀλλογενὴς οὗτος;

Luke 17:19

Now, being asked by the Pharisees when the kingdom of God comes, He answered them and said, “The kingdom of God does not come with observation.

Paraphrase:  Now after the ten lepers had gone to the priests and proven themselves to be clean (Luke 17:14), the news of this miracle filtered back to the Pharisees.  They were becoming increasingly frustrated with Jesus (Luke 16:14) and sent several of their number to Jesus to get some answers.  When they reached Jesus, they accosted Him directly.  “You talk a lot about the kingdom of God. (Matthew 4:23)  You even claim that you are bringing the kingdom of God to earth (Matthew 3:2) and that men and women can enter it by becoming one of Your disciples. (Luke 18:16)  Tell us plainly please, when will the kingdom of God come?  Is it something in the future that we are to hope for and expect?  or have you really inaugurated God’s kingdom now?”

Jesus answered them, “Yes, the kingdom of God is already here, and the reason you don’t see it is because you are looking for something visible and tangible.  You think My kingdom is like the Roman or Parthian empire with borders, large armies, a magnificent capital city, and a government, but this is not the kind of kingdom I am bringing to you.  My kingdom is not a visible, earthly kingdom (John 18:36), but a spiritual one.

Luke 17:21

Neither will they say, “Behold here or there!  For behold, the kingdom of God is among you.

Paraphrase:  That is why I am telling you that My kingdom is already here.  It is already growing and multiplying in front of you.  You don’t see it; but for all that, it is still present and active.  People are coming to Me and being reborn by the power of the Spirit of God. (John 3:3)  They are submitting to God’s reign and thus entering His kingdom.  Your idea of God’s kingdom is entirely mistaken.  You are looking for great fanfare and pomp.  You think that when it comes, people will shout, “There it is!  It’s finally here!  God’s kingdom has come!”  All the Jewish people will flock to this new leader.  Then a large army will be assembled, a decisive battle fought, the oppressors destroyed and driven off, and the Jewish people free.  Think again, however.  This is not the kingdom that God is setting up.

Comments:

Edersheim (p270):  In fact, an analysis of 119 passages in the New Testament where the expression ‘Kingdom’ occurs, shows that it means the rule of God; which was manifested in and through Christ; is apparent in the Church; gradually develops amidst hindrances; is triumphant at the second coming of Christ (‘the end’); and, finally, perfected in the world to come. Thus viewed, the announcement of John of the near Advent of this Kingdom had deepest meaning, although, as so often in the case of prophetism, the stages intervening between the Advent of the Christ and the triumph of that Kingdom seem to have been hidden from the preacher. He came to call Israel to submit to the Reign of God, about to be manifested in Christ.
