Jude 1:1
Jude, slave of Jesus Christ, and brother of James; to the called, being loved by God, the Father and Jesus Christ, being kept,
Paraphrase: This letter is from Jude who is, in the first place, a slave of Jesus Christ. You might know that I am also the brother of James, the apostle. I write this letter to all those who have received the effectual calling of God through the ministry of the Holy Spirit in their soul. Such ones are loved by our Father from before the foundation of the world. They were also loved by Jesus Christ who agreed in the eternal covenant to come to this earth and to give His life a ransom for their deliverance. Now you, brothers and sisters, having been called by God to enter a saving union with Jesus Christ, are also kept and preserved. Yes, the truth is that no one in heaven or earth can ever snatch you from our Father’s hand or separate you from the love of God which is in Jesus Christ our Lord.

Jude 1:2
But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit,
Paraphrase: Not so with you, my beloved brothers and sisters. Such strife and quarreling have no place in the household of God. On the contrary, keep yourself in the love of God (Jude 21), and how? Three ways. First, stand strong on the faith which was handed down to us from the apostles. Study these truths; and in so doing, your life of faith will be more secure and well established. You and God’s people will have a deeper appreciation for God’s love, and your life will be transformed. Second, as you study, pray constantly for the guiding and illuminating ministry of the Holy Spirit to bring you into the truth and to keep you from error. (Jude 19) Jesus promised us this ministry of the Holy Spirit (John 14:26); let us take hold of this promise and claim it for ourselves. All the powers of hell are trying hard to bring you off from the truth (Luke 22:31); pray for God’s preserving grace to keep your mind on the right path.

The participles building and praying in this verse, and expecting in the next, are all modifying the main verb keep τηρήσατε in the next verse.
Jude 1:21
keep yourselves in the love of God, expecting the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ, unto life eternal.
Paraphrase: Finally, never forget to look up and to see our Lord Jesus Christ getting ready to make His return. It won’t be long now, brothers and sisters, when He will appear, not as a tender baby in a manger, but as the Great King and Sovereign of heaven and earth. He will setup His kingdom here and will cast out of it everything that defiles and smells of evil. He will usher us into that kingdom; it is our glorious inheritance. We will live forever and ever in this perfect place. Does this not lead your mind into the love of God for us? and does it not cause your heart to burn with love for our God and Savior?

Jude 1:22
And for some, show mercy doubting.
Paraphrase: Remember too, as a good shepherd, to deal with each member of the flock with wisdom and care. With those who are wavering, be tender and patient. There are those Christians who struggle to make sense of it all. They are praying earnestly to God that He would shine His light into their darkness and confusion. With such persons, be patient and help them along as a good shepherd would. God is at work in their soul.

Jude 1:23
And others save, grabbing out of the fire. And others, show mercy in fear hating even the clothing stained from the flesh.
Paraphrase: There are others who are not Christians at all. If they continue on their current path, they will perish eternally in the torments of hell. Now step up and lovingly confront them with the error of their way. Help them to see that the path they are on does not lead to pleasure, happiness, and a satisfying life in this life or the next. Show them that the end of such things is misery and death. By so doing, you may snatch them from the very jaws of hell. What a blessing that would be! Then, there are those who may be willing to listen to you, but they are sold out to a life of sin and pleasure seeking. Be careful with these; they are wonderfully skilled at turning the tables and drawing you into their lifestyle. Watch out! You may pride yourself on being strong and secure in your faith, but let the one who thinks he stands, take care lest he fall. Put plenty of distance between you and all the temptations by which Satan hopes to bring you to hell with all the rest of his disciples.
