Exodus 12

Exodus 12:1

And YHWH spoke to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt saying,

Paraphrase: Then YHWH spoke to Moses and Aaron who were still in the land of Egypt and under the heel of Pharaoh.

Exodus 12:2

This month for you, the beginning of months, the first it is for you to the months of the year.

Paraphrase: “Listen, men, I am now going to give you the calendar that you are to follow in all your life and society.  The month we are in right now will be the first month.  From now on, you are to regard this month as month 1.”

Comments:

On a month, see Schurer p365.  Fairbairn says (p437) this month would have corresponded to the middle of our April.

Exodus 12:3

Speak to all the assembly of Israel saying, “On the tenth of this month, then they will take for themselves, each, a lamb to the house of father, a lamb for a house.

Paraphrase: Furthermore, instruct all those who are assembled to do the following.  “When the tenth day of the month arrives, each family is to choose a lamb.  They will treat this lamb with great kindness even bringing it into their home.  Each family will have a lamb.”

Exodus 12:4

Now if the house is small than might be from a lamb, then he takes and his near neighbor to his house, by number of souls each for a mouth eating, you compute on a lamb.

Paraphrase: Now if there are not enough people in your house to eat an entire lamb, then you will speak with your neighbor and invite him to your house.  With both families together, there will be enough people to eat the entire lamb without any left overs.  To know how many people you will need to eat the entire lamb, simply estimate how much each person in the household typically eats and act accordingly.

Exodus 12:12

And I will pass over through the land of Egypt on this night, and I will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from men and to cattle and on all the gods of Egypt, I will make judgment, I am YHWH.

Paraphrase: Now in the same night when you are eating this meal, I will pass through every part of the land of Egypt and find every person who is the oldest male child (Exodus 11:5) in his family.  Then, I will strike that person dead on the spot.  Yes, I will strike dead even the firstborn of the cattle.  In this way, I will bring down My wrath and judgments upon all the fake gods of Egypt (Exodus 6:1) and make a public display of My supremacy and sovereignty.  I am YHWH, the Great King who makes and keeps covenant forever. (Genesis 15:7; 28:13; Exodus 20:2; Deuteronomy 5:6)

Exodus 12:13

And the blood will be for you for a sign on the houses which you are there, and I will see the blood and will pass over you, and the blow will not be on you for destruction when I strike the land of Egypt.

Paraphrase: Remember the blood which I told you to smear on the sides and top of your door frames? (Exodus 12:7)  This blood will be a sign marking this house as one of those families that fears and worships Me.  It will mark that house as belonging to one of My people.  When I see it, I will pass over that house and will not strike dead its firstborn.  This is critical to remember because I am about to pour out My wrath on Egypt.  No family will be spared except those with blood on their door frame.

And YHWH said to Moses and Aaron: “This is the statute of the Passover; every son of a foreigner will not eat it.

Paraphrase: Then YHWH said to Moses and Aaron, “One more thing about the Passover.  Be sure that no foreigner participates in your Passover celebrations unless he is willing to become My disciple.”

Exodus 12:44

And each servant of a man, a purchase of silver, and you circumcise him, then he will eat it.

Paraphrase: Now if one of your slaves or indentured servants wishes to participate in the Passover, he must first confess his faith in God and then be circumcised.  When he does this, he is welcome to the Passover feast.

Comments:

The final ה on וּמַלְתָּה must be paragogic.

Exodus 12:45

A stranger and hired person will not eat it.

Paraphrase: You are not to allow just any person to participate in the Passover celebration.  A visitor to your town or someone who is passing through or someone, whom you hired to do some work for you, is not allowed to partake.

Comments:

Exodus 12:46

In a house of one, it will be eaten; you will not cause from the flesh from the house to go forth to the outside, and a bone you will not break it.

Paraphrase: Do not take any of the Passover plates or cups to the outside to give them to others.  The meat and drink of the Passover is only for those who know, love, and serve YHWH.  Therefore, each family should observe the Passover in their own house and not go from house to house.  Also remember that not a single bone of the Passover animal is to be broken.

Comments:

Exodus 12:47

All the assembly of Israel will do it.

Paraphrase: On the other hand, no member of the Israelite community may absent himself from this feast.  It is not an optional thing.  Every member of the community must prepare and celebrate the Passover meal.  Anyone who fails to eat this meal, shows that he does not regard what YHWH did on that night as anything of significance. (Exodus 12:14)

Exodus 12:48

And if a sojourner sojourns with you and does the Passover for YHWH, circumcise him, every male, and then he will draw near to do it, and it will be as a native of the land and every uncircumcised male will not eat it.

Paraphrase: Now if there is a person traveling through your country who desires to participate in your Passover feast because he loves YHWH, let him be circumcised, along with all the other males of his household, and then he is welcome to participate in the Passover.  Under these circumstances, he is to be considered the equal of a native born Israelite.  If, however, he does not love YHWH and is unwilling to be circumcised, then he is not to be admitted to your Passover celebration.

Comments:

For the infinitive here, see §113.gg.

Exodus 12:49

Instruction one will be for the native and for the sojourner sojourning in your midst.

Paraphrase: Everyone will be treated the same.  These instructions which I’ve given you are to be applied across the board regardless of whether the participant is Jew or gentile, native-born or a visitor.

Exodus 12:50

And all the sons of Israel did as YHWH commanded Moses and Aaron, and thus they did.

Paraphrase: Now all the people of Israel heard what YHWH said to Moses and Aaron, and they promptly obeyed.  Moses and Aaron also got up and saw to it that every detail of what they had received from God was put into practice.

Exodus 12:51

And it came to pass, on this very day, that YHWH caused the sons of Israel to go forth from the land of Egypt on their armies.

Paraphrase: Now this very day, on which God gave His people these instructions, was the same day that He led His people out of the land of Egypt, the house of bondage, and set them on a path for the promised land.  All the people of Israel were a numerous and mighty army of people just as God had promised to Abraham.
