Exodus 21:1
וְאֵ֙לֶּה֙ הַמִּשְׁפָּטִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר תָּשִׂ֖ים לִפְנֵיהֶֽם׃
Now these are the statutes which you shall place before them.
Paraphrase: Having given Moses the moral law as contained in the ten commands, God now proceeded to spell out the laws regulating civil and criminal matters. “These are the laws,” He said to Moses, “which you will write down and place before My people. Carefully teach them these laws so that they will be holy as I am holy.” (Leviticus 11:44; 20:7)

Exodus 21:2
כִּ֤י תִקְנֶה֙ עֶ֣בֶד עִבְרִ֔י שֵׁ֥שׁ שָׁנִ֖ים יַעֲבֹ֑ד וּבַ֨שְּׁבִעִ֔ת יֵצֵ֥א לַֽחָפְשִׁ֖י חִנָּֽם׃
When you purchase a servant of the Hebrews, six years he will serve you and in the seventh, he will go forth free at no cost.
Paraphrase: First, when a member of My people comes into circumstances where he cannot repay a debt, he may sell himself and his labor in order to pay off this debt. (Leviticus 25:39) If you are the one to purchase this man’s labor, know that this man is to serve you for a maximum of six years. On the seventh year, you must release him, forgive any of his outstanding debts, and allow him to return to his family. He is to be set completely free; he does not owe you anything. (Exodus 21:11; Deuteronomy 15:13)

Exodus 21:3
אִם־בְּגַפּ֥וֹ יָבֹ֖א בְּגַפּ֣וֹ יֵצֵ֑א אִם־בַּ֤עַל אִשָּׁה֙ ה֔וּא וְיָצְאָ֥ה אִשְׁתּ֖וֹ עִמּֽוֹ׃
If he came by himself, by himself he shall go forth. If he owned a wife, then his wife will go forth with him.
Paraphrase: If he came into your employ as a single man, then he will leave a single man. If he came as a married man, then he will leave with his wife with him.

Exodus 21:4
אִם־אֲדֹנָיו֙ יִתֶּן־ל֣וֹ אִשָּׁ֔ה וְיָלְדָה־ל֥וֹ בָנִ֖ים א֣וֹ בָנ֑וֹת הָאִשָּׁ֣ה וִילָדֶ֗יהָ תִּהְיֶה֙ לַֽאדֹנֶ֔יהָ וְה֖וּא יֵצֵ֥א בְגַפּֽוֹ׃
If his master gives to him a wife and the wife bears to him sons or daughters, the wife and her children will be to his master and he will forth by himself.
Paraphrase: If, on the other hand, this man falls in love with one of his master’s slave girls, then he is allowed to marry her and to begin a family with her. On the seventh year, however, when the man is allowed to go free, his wife and children will not go out with him. The family must continue to live together. The husband and wife will continue their mutual responsibilities to love and care for each other and their children, but the wife and her children will still belong to the master. He has a right to their labor.

Exodus 21:5
וְאִם־אָמֹ֤ר יֹאמַר֙ הָעֶ֔בֶד אָהַ֙בְתִּי֙ אֶת־אֲדֹנִ֔י אֶת־אִשְׁתִּ֖י וְאֶת־בָּנָ֑י לֹ֥א אֵצֵ֖א חָפְשִֽׁי׃
and if saying, the servant will say, “I love my master, my wife and my sons; I will not go forth free.”
Paraphrase: Now perhaps the man, recognizing the kindness of his master in giving him a wife and family, does not want to go free. Perhaps he tells his master that he very much enjoys being his employee. He loves his wife and children and the new life they have with their new master, and he has no desire to return to his previous way of life.

Exodus 21:6
וְהִגִּישׁ֤וֹ אֲדֹנָיו֙ אֶל־הָ֣אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְהִגִּישׁוֹ֙ אֶל־הַדֶּ֔לֶת א֖וֹ אֶל־הַמְּזוּזָ֑ה וְרָצַ֨ע אֲדֹנָ֤יו אֶת־אָזְנוֹ֙ בַּמַּרְצֵ֔עַ וַעֲבָד֖וֹ לְעֹלָֽם׃ס
and his master causes him to draw near to the judges, and he causes him to draw near the door or to the threshold, and his master pierces his ear with an awl, and he will serve him forever.
Paraphrase: If this be the case, then the master shall bring the man to the elders of Israel. Together, they must return to the man’s house and stand before his doorway. Then the master shall take the man and position his ear directly in front of the door. When the man’s ear is in place, he shall drive a nail through the man’s ear lobe and into the door. This ritual will then seal the man’s decision to be the servant of the master for life.

וְאִם־שֵׁ֥ן עַבְדּ֛וֹ אֽוֹ־שֵׁ֥ן אֲמָת֖וֹ יַפִּ֑יל לַֽחָפְשִׁ֥י יְשַׁלְּחֶ֖נּוּ תַּ֥חַת שִׁנּֽוֹ׃פ

וְכִֽי־יִגַּ֨ח שׁ֥וֹר אֶת־אִ֛ישׁ א֥וֹ אֶת־אִשָּׁ֖ה וָמֵ֑ת סָק֨וֹל יִסָּקֵ֜ל הַשּׁ֗וֹר וְלֹ֤א יֵאָכֵל֙ אֶת־בְּשָׂר֔וֹ וּבַ֥עַל הַשּׁ֖וֹר נָקִֽי׃
