Proverbs 1

Proverbs 1:1

מִ֭שְׁלֵי שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה בֶן־דָּוִ֑ד מֶ֝֗לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

 

Proverbs 1:2

לָדַ֣עַת חָכְמָ֣ה וּמוּסָ֑ר לְ֝הָבִ֗ין אִמְרֵ֥י בִינָֽה׃

 

Proverbs 1:3

לָ֭קַחַת מוּסַ֣ר הַשְׂכֵּ֑ל צֶ֥דֶק וּ֝מִשְׁפָּ֗ט וּמֵישָׁרִֽים׃

 

Proverbs 1:4

לָתֵ֣ת לִפְתָאיִ֣ם עָרְמָ֑ה לְ֝נַ֗עַר דַּ֣עַת וּמְזִמָּֽה׃

 

Proverbs 1:5

יִשְׁמַ֣ע חָ֭כָם וְי֣וֹסֶף לֶ֑קַח וְ֝נָב֗וֹן תַּחְבֻּל֥וֹת יִקְנֶֽה׃

 

Proverbs 1:6

לְהָבִ֣ין מָ֭שָׁל וּמְלִיצָ֑ה דִּבְרֵ֥י חֲ֝כָמִ֗ים וְחִידֹתָֽם׃

 

Proverbs 1:7

יִרְאַ֣ת יְ֭הוָה רֵאשִׁ֣ית דָּ֑עַת חָכְמָ֥ה וּ֝מוּסָ֗ר אֱוִילִ֥ים בָּֽזוּ׃פ

 

Proverbs 1:8

שְׁמַ֣ע בְּ֭נִי מוּסַ֣ר אָבִ֑יךָ וְאַל־תִּ֝טֹּ֗שׁ תּוֹרַ֥ת אִמֶּֽךָ׃

 

Proverbs 1:9

כִּ֤י׀ לִוְיַ֤ת חֵ֓ן הֵ֬ם לְרֹאשֶׁ֑ךָ וַ֝עֲנָקִ֗ים לְגַרְגְּרֹתֶֽיךָ׃

 

Proverbs 1:10

בְּנִ֡י אִם־יְפַתּ֥וּךָ חַ֝טָּאִ֗ים אַל־תֹּבֵֽא׃

 

Proverbs 1:11

אִם־יֹאמְרוּ֮ לְכָ֪ה אִ֫תָּ֥נוּ נֶאֶרְבָ֥ה לְדָ֑ם נִצְפְּנָ֖ה לְנָקִ֣י חִנָּֽם׃

 

Proverbs 1:12

נִ֭בְלָעֵם כִּשְׁא֣וֹל חַיִּ֑ים וּ֝תְמִימִ֗ים כְּי֣וֹרְדֵי בֽוֹר׃

 

Proverbs 1:13

כָּל־ה֣וֹן יָקָ֣ר נִמְצָ֑א נְמַלֵּ֖א בָתֵּ֣ינוּ שָׁלָֽל׃

 

Proverbs 1:14

גּ֭וֹרָ֣לְךָ תַּפִּ֣יל בְּתוֹכֵ֑נוּ כִּ֥יס אֶ֝חָ֗ד יִהְיֶ֥ה לְכֻלָּֽנוּ׃

 

Proverbs 1:15

בְּנִ֗י אַל־תֵּלֵ֣ךְ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ אִתָּ֑ם מְנַ֥ע רַ֝גְלְךָ֗ מִנְּתִיבָתָֽם׃

 

Proverbs 1:16

כִּ֣י רַ֭גְלֵיהֶם לָרַ֣ע יָר֑וּצוּ וִֽ֝ימַהֲר֗וּ לִשְׁפָּךְ־דָּֽם׃

 

Proverbs 1:17

כִּֽי־חִ֭נָּם מְזֹרָ֣ה הָרָ֑שֶׁת בְּ֝עֵינֵ֗י כָל־בַּ֥עַל כָּנָֽף׃

 

Proverbs 1:18

וְ֭הֵם לְדָמָ֣ם יֶאֱרֹ֑בוּ יִ֝צְפְּנ֗וּ לְנַפְשֹׁתָֽם׃

 

Proverbs 1:19

כֵּ֗ן אָ֭רְחוֹת כָּל־בֹּ֣צֵֽעַ בָּ֑צַע אֶת־נֶ֖פֶשׁ בְּעָלָ֣יו יִקָּֽח׃פ

 

Proverbs 1:20

חָ֭כְמוֹת בַּח֣וּץ תָּרֹ֑נָּה בָּ֝רְחֹב֗וֹת תִּתֵּ֥ן קוֹלָֽהּ׃

 

Proverbs 1:21

בְּרֹ֥אשׁ הֹמִיּ֗וֹת תִּ֫קְרָ֥א בְּפִתְחֵ֖י שְׁעָרִ֥ים בָּעִ֗יר אֲמָרֶ֥יהָ תֹאמֵֽר׃

 

Proverbs 1:22

עַד־מָתַ֣י׀ פְּתָיִם֮ תְּֽאֵהֲב֫וּ פֶ֥תִי וְלֵצִ֗ים לָ֭צוֹן חָמְד֣וּ לָהֶ֑ם וּ֝כְסִילִ֗ים יִשְׂנְאוּ־דָֽעַת׃

 

Proverbs 1:23

תָּשׁ֗וּבוּ לְֽת֫וֹכַחְתִּ֥י הִנֵּ֤ה אַבִּ֣יעָה לָכֶ֣ם רוּחִ֑י אוֹדִ֖יעָה דְבָרַ֣י אֶתְכֶֽם׃

 


Proverbs 1:24

יַ֣עַן קָ֭רָאתִי וַתְּמָאֵ֑נוּ נָטִ֥יתִי יָ֝דִ֗י וְאֵ֣ין מַקְשִֽׁיב׃

Because I called, and you refused; I stretched out My hand, and there is no one paying attention.

Paraphrase: Now look, I have called you sincerely and repeatedly.  I have stretched out My hands to you with a sincere offer of salvation, but no one was paying any attention.

Proverbs 1:25

וַתִּפְרְע֥וּ כָל־עֲצָתִ֑י וְ֝תוֹכַחְתִּ֗י לֹ֣א אֲבִיתֶֽם׃

And you let go of all My advice and My corrections, you did not accept.

Paraphrase: Instead, you just disregarded all My directives.  When I corrected you, you would not accept it but rather resented it.

Proverbs 1:26

גַּם־אֲ֭נִי בְּאֵידְכֶ֣ם אֶשְׂחָ֑ק אֶ֝לְעַ֗ג בְּבֹ֣א פַחְדְּכֶֽם׃

Also, I, at your distress, will laugh; I will scoff when your terror comes.

Paraphrase: Now then, I believe that I have done all that I need to do to make the way of salvation clear to you.  I have held out My hands to you and shown you the way of truth and right.  Instead, you have chosen to go your own way and to bring untold destruction upon yourself.  Then, it will be My turn to laugh at your folly and to show you no pity or compassion.

Proverbs 1:27

בְּבֹ֤א כְשַׁאֲוָה פַּחְדְּכֶ֗ם וְֽ֭אֵידְכֶם כְּסוּפָ֣ה יֶאֱתֶ֑ה בְּבֹ֥א עֲ֝לֵיכֶ֗ם צָרָ֥ה וְצוּקָֽה׃

When as a storm comes your terror, and your distress will come as a wind, when on you is trouble and anguish.

Paraphrase: Then terror and distress will fall on you just as a storm suddenly rises and wreaks havoc with wind and rain.  It will be a time of great trouble and anguish.

Proverbs 1:28

אָ֣ז יִ֭קְרָאֻנְנִי וְלֹ֣א אֶֽעֱנֶ֑ה יְ֝שַׁחֲרֻ֗נְנִי וְלֹ֣א יִמְצָאֻֽנְנִי׃

Then, they will call on Me and I will not answer; they will seek Me but will not find Me.

Paraphrase: Then the time of My patience will end; the time for reckoning and punishment will have arrived.  When My wrath falls on you, you will realize your terrible mistake.  You will call out to Me and beg for mercy, but I will not hear; I will not respond.  You will seek and ask for Me, but you will not find Me ready and waiting to come to your rescue.  That time of grace has passed.  When this time comes, it will be a time for judgment and wrath.

Proverbs 1:29

תַּ֭חַת כִּי־שָׂ֣נְאוּ דָּ֑עַת וְיִרְאַ֥ת יְ֝הֹוָ֗ה לֹ֣א בָחָֽרוּ׃

Instead of that, they hated knowledge; and the fear of YHWH, they did not choose.

Paraphrase: Instead of listening to and obeying all My instructions, you hated them.  You resented the fact that I gave you laws to keep.  You gave your respect and allegiance to something else instead of fearing God who is able to cast both soul and body into hell. (Matthew 10:28)

Proverbs 1:30

לֹא־אָב֥וּ לַעֲצָתִ֑י נָ֝אֲצ֗וּ כָּל־תּוֹכַחְתִּֽי׃

They did not consent to My advice; they despised My corrections.

Paraphrase: Now this is why I will laugh and scoff at your distress.  I showed you the way to live so that you would live in peace and safety, but you cast aside My teaching.  Then when I corrected you for your disobedience, you blasphemed Me and hurled insults at Me.  Well, then, I also will laugh at you when My punishments come down on your head.

Proverbs 1:31

וְֽ֭יֹאכְלוּ מִפְּרִ֣י דַרְכָּ֑ם וּֽמִמֹּעֲצֹ֖תֵיהֶ֣ם יִשְׂבָּֽעוּ׃

And they will eat from the fruit of their way; and from their plans, they will be satisfied.

Paraphrase: Then they will experience the results of what they have chosen for themselves.  What they have sown, they now will reap.  They will eat the fruit from the trees which they planted.  Yes, they will be stuffed full of their own plans and their own ideas of how to flourish in life.

Proverbs 1:32

כִּ֤י מְשׁוּבַ֣ת פְּתָיִ֣ם תַּֽהַרְגֵ֑ם וְשַׁלְוַ֖ת כְּסִילִ֣ים תְּאַבְּדֵֽם׃

For the turning of the simple will kill them, and the ease of the fools will destroy them.

Paraphrase: Yes, when those who are easily influenced by the culture get up and blindly follow the world into all its pleasures and delights, they will end up dead.  The lazy fools who live lives of ease and luxury will find that this very prosperity will soon kill them.

Proverbs 1:33

וְשֹׁמֵ֣עַֽ לִ֭י יִשְׁכָּן־בֶּ֑טַח וְ֝שַׁאֲנַ֗ן מִפַּ֥חַד רָעָֽה׃פ

and the one listening to Me will dwell safely and will be at rest from terror of evil.

Paraphrase: Those, however, who love Me and listen carefully to My teaching, will live in safety and in peace without any fear of My wrath and judgments.
