Psalm 51

Psalms 51:1

Against You, against You only, I have sinned and done the evil in Your eyes so that You might be just in Your word; you will be clear in your verdict.

Paraphrase: I treated Uriah with a savageness more becoming of a beast than a man.  Furthermore, You so clearly forbad Your people to murder (Exodus 20:13) and now look what I’ve done.  My sin against Uriah was bad enough; my sin against Bathsheba is doubly wicked, but my real guilt is that I sinned against You.  I have broken the covenant of friendship and loyalty which exists between us.  There’s no question that I deserve to die.  Your guilty verdict is justly deserved; I have nothing to say against it.  Everyone should know that You have acted in perfect justice.

Comments:

The lamed here is a dative of disadvantage. (§119s)

לְמַעַן is a conjunction showing purpose or result. (Van der Merwe, Hebrew Reference Grammar, §40.13)  Here, it clearly shows result.  BDB says (right column p775) that this conjunction is never ekbatic or result, but see Lanchester’s footnote on p153.

Psalms 51:5

Look, in guilt I was delivered, and in sin, my mother conceived me.

Paraphrase: Now I see so clearly that I have been a sinner from the very day my mother gave birth to me.  In fact, from the moment I was conceived, I was prone to all manner of sin.

Comments:

See original sin.  The act of sex is not seen as sinful in the Bible.

Eichrodt calls this “being a sinner simply as a result of one’s natural human descent.” Theology of the Old Testament, 1:268

Luther: He [David] shows the cause of sin and, as it were, opens up the basis of the whole transaction, explaining why he confesses his sin and begs for mercy: “because,” he says, “I was conceived in iniquity.” What could be said more clearly and meaningfully? He does not say, “I murdered Uriah.” He does not say, “I committed adultery.” But he wraps up all of human nature as in one bundle and says, “I was conceived in sin.” He is not talking about certain actions but simply about the matter, and he says: “The human seed, this mass from which I was formed, is totally corrupt with faults and sins. The material itself is faulty. The clay, so to speak, out of which this vessel began to be formed is damnable. What more do you want? This is how I am; this is how all men are. Our very conception, the very growth of the foetus in the womb, is sin, even before we are born and begin to be human beings.”   Works 12.347–348.
