Jeremiah 31

Jeremiah 31:1

At that time, an utterance of YHWH;  I will be for a God to all the families of Israel and they will be to Me for a people.

Paraphrase:  This is a message from YHWH, Great King of heaven and earth.  I know My people are in exile and are being punished for their idolatry.  For all that, I am still their God; there is a solemn covenant between us, and I will never abandon My people.  There is a time coming, when I will establish a new covenant between Me and My people. (Jeremiah 31:31)  Then, I will be the God of all the families of Israel, protecting them, leading them, and providing for their every need.  This is what I will do for My people.  I will work within them (Deuteronomy 30:6; Ezekiel 11:19; 36:26) such that they will be My faithful people bringing praise and honor to the Glory of My Great Name. (Isaiah 43:21)  They will no longer be an unfaithful and adulterous people. (Jeremiah 3:22; Ezekiel 39:25-26)

Comments:

The lamed preposition on לֵאלֹהִים and לְעָם are showing advantage, similar to a dative of advantage.  The lamed on לְכֹל and לִי are showing possession.

Jeremiah 31:2

Thus says YHWH; the people found grace in the wilderness, the survivors of the sword, to go, to give rest to Israel.

Paraphrase:  Thus speaks YHWH, the Great King;  My people experienced first hand My love and grace when they were in the wilderness.  Those who had escaped from Egypt met Me at Mount Sinai.  They saw how I came down on the smoking, burning mountain and made a covenant with them. (Exodus 19:18)  Then, I led them through the wilderness going before them in a pillar of cloud by day and in a pillar of fire by night. (Exodus 13:21)  I provided them with bread (Exodus 16:31) and water (Exodus 17:6), and I gave them a promise of entering into My rest. (Hebrews 3:18-19)

Jeremiah 31:3

From a distant land, YHWH appeared to me; a love eternal, I have loved you; therefore, I have drawn you [with] love.

Paraphrase:  Now I, Jeremiah, am YHWH’s prophet and spokesman, and I would remind you of what you already know so well.  When we were wandering about in the wilderness ready to perish, YHWH appeared to us.  Though He inhabits the highest heaven (1 Kings 8:27) and is very far above us, yet He heard our cries for help and rushed to save us. (Deuteronomy 33:26)  He comforted us and told us that His love was an everlasting love.  It was not the kind of fickle love which comes and goes.  No, our God never sleeps or forgets. (Psalm 121:4)  The proof of His love is clear; He delivered us from Egypt, led us through the wilderness, and settled us in the land which He had promised to our fathers.  All this, He did because of His love for us.

Comments:

For עַל־כֵּן see left column on p487(f) where it is said that this conjunction introduces a statement of fact, rather than a declaration.

Keil (p17):  “…the prophet speaks in the name of the people, of which he views himself as one…”

Jeremiah 31:4

Again, I will build you, and you will be built, Oh virgin of Israel.  Again, you will put on tambourines and go forth with dancing, laughing.

Paraphrase:  Now here what YHWH is promising us, Oh Israel.  “I will bring you back to the land which I gave you.  I will strengthen your hands so that you can rebuild the burned out cities.  You will clear away the rubbish and rebuild My house and your homes.  Once again, you will gather together for good times and for fellowship.  You will put ringing bells and colored tassels on your clothing.  You will come and go with dancing and much joy and laughter.

For after I turned, I regretted, and after I was caused to know, I slapped on the thigh; I was ashamed and also I was humiliated because I carried the reproach of my youth.

Paraphrase:  Then God heard our prayer.  He came to our rescue and brought us back to our senses.  We turned our back on our previous way of life and came to Him.  After we had turned back to God, we clearly saw how earnestly He loved us.  We saw how He longed for our salvation.  It also caused us to see just how desperately wicked our unfaithfulness was.  Now we saw our sin against the backdrop of His love; how bitterly we regretted these sinful choices.  Our covenant breaking now appeared to us as the most wretched ingratitude.  We were so ashamed of ourselves; we hardly knew where to turn.  The reproach and ugliness of what we had done haunted us everywhere we went.

Behold, the days are coming, says YHWH, and I will cut with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, a new covenant.

Paraphrase:  “Now hear this,” says the YHWH, the Great King, “There is a time coming when I am going to set up a new covenant with both the ten tribes of Israel in the north and the two tribes of Judah in the south.”

Comments:

Jeremiah predicts the reunification of the ten northern tribes with the two southern tribes (Jeremiah 50:4-5) as does Ezekiel. (Ezekiel 37:16)

Jeremiah 31:32

Not like the covenant which I cut with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to cause them to go forth from the land of Egypt which they violated My covenant and I husbanded them.” says YHWH.

Paraphrase:  This covenant will not be like the covenant which I made with Israel at Mt Sinai after I delivered them from the bondage of Egypt.  At that time, I had taken them by the hand and brought them out of Egypt, through the Red Sea, and to My holy mountain. (Exodus 19:4)  There, I entered into a covenant with them, and they solemnly swore to keep that covenant. (Exodus 24:7)  The truth is, however, that they have not kept my covenant.  I promised to be a husband (Exodus 19:5; Jeremiah 2:2; Ezekiel 16:8; Hosea 1:3) to them, to provide for them and to protect them from anyone who would do them harm.  In spite of all this, they dismissed My covenant and paid it no regard.  They did whatever they wanted with no regard to My commands.

“For this is the covenant which I will cut with the house of Israel after those days,” says YHWH.  “I will give My covenant into their inner part and on their heart, I will write it, and I will be for them for a God and they will be for Me for a people.

Paraphrase:  “Now this is the covenant which I will establish with My people, Israel.”  says YHWH, the Great King.  “I will make the same demands on them as previously; but now I will write these on their hearts.  I will take My covenant with all its conditions and put it into the depths of their soul.  Then, the result will be a covenant-keeping people, holy and pure in rejoicing in fellowship and communion with a holy God.

and they will not teach again each man his friend and each man his brother saying, “Know YHWH because all of them will know Me from the smallest and to their greatest.” says YHWH, “for I will forgive their guilt, and their sins I will not remember again.”

Paraphrase:  Neither will they have to instruct and remind each other to know Me for the simple reason that every Israelite will know Me, from the youngest infant to the oldest of their number.  All their past covenant breaking, I will forgive; it will not even enter My mind again. (Psalm 103:12)

Jeremiah 31:35

Thus says YHWH who is giving the sun for a light by day, the statutes of the moon and stars for light by night, who is stirring up the sea and his waves roar.  YHWH of hosts is His Name.

Paraphrase:  This is the word of YHWH, the Great King.  His word is trustworthy and true because He is the One who created the sun to rule the day and the moon to rule the night. (Genesis 1:16)  He set both of these to run in their circuits rising and setting at their appointed times. (Psalm 104:19)  YHWH is the One who touches the sea with a storm, and soon the waves are raging and foaming with a tremendous roar. (Psalm 65:7; 107:25)  This is the One who is saying these things.

If these statutes depart from before Me,” says YHWH, “then the seed of Israel will cease to be a nation before Me all their days.”

Paraphrase:  “My word is this; Israel shall never fail to be a nation before Me.  The possibility of Israel disappearing from history is just as likely as if the sun and moon should stop rising and setting as they have always done.”

Comments:

Ewald (p276) notes that sometimes an apodosis is indicated by a גַּם as here.
