Memory Work:
Q1. What does God require in the fourth commandment?
That I, especially on the Lord’s Day, diligently attend church to learn his word, to use the sacraments, to call upon him publicly, and to give Christian alms. (Hebrews 10:24, 25)
Q2. For what purpose are we to observe the Lord’s Day?
Here we must learn to rest from all our evil works, to let the Holy Spirit work in us, and so begin the heavenly life on earth. (Hebrews 4:11)
Q3. What does God require in the fifth commandment?
That I show honor, love and faithfulness to my parents and everyone whom God places in authority over me. (Romans 13:1)
Q4. Why does God require this of me?
God requires this of me because He is pleased so to govern me and to preserve order and decency in this world. (1 Timothy 2:1, 2)
Things to Look Up:
1. How does God want us to keep his day holy?
- “If because of the sabbath, you turn your foot From doing your [own] pleasure on My holy day, And call the sabbath a delight, the holy [day] of the LORD honorable, And honor it, desisting from your [own] ways, From seeking your [own] pleasure And speaking [your own] word, (Isaiah 58:13)
2. Prove from the New Testament that believers kept the first instead of the seventh day.
- On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul [began] talking to them, intending to leave the next day, and he prolonged his message until midnight. (Acts 20:7)
- On the first day of every week each one of you is to put aside and save, as he may prosper, so that no collections be made when I come. (1 Corinthians 16:2)
- I was in the Spirit on the Lord’s day, and I heard behind me a loud voice like the sound of a trumpet, saying, “Write in a book what you see, and send it to the seven churches: to Ephesus and to Smyrna and to Pergamum and to Thyatira and to Sardis and to Philadelphia and to Laodicea.” (Revelation 1:10-11)
3. Why and how should we keep the Lord’s day as a day of rest?
- So there remains a Sabbath rest for the people of God. For the one who has entered His rest has himself also rested from his works, as God did from His. Therefore let us be diligent to enter that rest, so that no one will fall, through following the same example of disobedience. (Hebrews 4:9-11)
4. When is divorce permitted by God? What does God say about persons who obtain unbiblical divorces?
- …but I say to you that everyone who divorces his wife, except for the reason of unchastity, makes her commit adultery; and whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery. (Matthew 5:32)
5. How should we view the government and its authority over our lives?
- For rulers are not a cause of fear for good behavior, but for evil. Do you want to have no fear of authority? Do what is good and you will have praise from the same; for it is a minister of God to you for good. But if you do what is evil, be afraid; for it does not bear the sword for nothing; for it is a minister of God, an avenger who brings wrath on the one who practices evil. (Romans 13:3-4)
