John 8

John 8:1

John 8:5

ἐν δὲ τῷ νόμῳ, Μωϋσῆς* ἡμῖν ἐνετείλατο τὰς τοιαύτας λιθάζειν*. σὺ οὖν, τί λέγεις;

John 8:6

John 8:10

ἀνακύψας δὲ, ὁ Ἰησοῦς εἶπεν αὐτῇ, 〈Ἡ〉 Γύναι*, ποῦ εἰσιν 〈ἐκεῖνοι οἱ κατήγοροί σου〉; οὐδείς σε κατέκρινεν;

John 8:11

John 8:22

Ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, Μήτι ἀποκτενεῖ ἑαυτὸν, ὅτι λέγει, Ὅπου ἐγὼ ὑπάγω, ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν;

John 8:23

While He was speaking these things, many believed in Him.

Paraphrase:  Now as Jesus was explaining these truths to the people, many were convinced and put their trust in Him.

John 8:31

Therefore, Jesus kept speaking to those who had believed on Him, the Jews, “If you remain in My word, truly My disciples you are.”

Paraphrase:  When Jesus noticed that many of the Jews, who were in His audience, had believed His message and that they were now interested in following Him as disciples, He began to explain to them what it meant to be His disciple.  “Here’s lesson one,” He announced, “A genuine disciple perseveres. (Matthew 24:13)  If you are going to be My disciple, then you must not only hear the truths I am teaching, understand them, and hold them to be true, but you must also persevere in them.  Watch carefully against every temptation to give up your commitment to Me.  Never be persuaded by some influencer or some other voice to turn from My teachings and to follow someone else.  Remember the parable I told you about the sower!” (Matthew 13:1-23)

John 8:32

and you will know the truth and the truth will liberate you.

Paraphrase:  Those who do this will know the truth, and this truth will set them free.

John 8:33

Ἀπεκρίθησαν πρὸς αὐτόν, Σπέρμα Ἀβραάμ ἐσμεν, καὶ οὐδενὶ δεδουλεύκαμεν πώποτε. πῶς σὺ λέγεις ὅτι, Ἐλεύθεροι γενήσεσθε;

They answered to him, “The seed of Abraham we are, and under no one we have served ever.  How do you say that free you will be?”

Paraphrase:  At this comment, the Jews drew back.  “Wait,” they said, “Did you say free?  We are the children of Abraham and are in covenant with the Almighty God who holds the entire universe in His hands.  We have never been slaves to anyone even when we were subject to the Egyptians, or the Babylonians or the Romans.  What do you mean when you say that believing the truth will set us free?  Are You implying that we are slaves?”

John 8:34

Jesus answered them, “Verily, verily I say to you, Everyone doing sin is a slave of sin.

Paraphrase:  “Let me clarify,” said Jesus.  “When I talk about liberty, I am not talking about political liberty or simply being a descendent of Abraham.  I am talking about being a slave of sin.  Here’s the truth I want you to understand.  Everyone who dismisses the truth from God and chooses to live by someone else’s teaching is actually a slave of sin. (Romans 6:16)  Sin is this man’s master; such a person is led about in chains and is dominated by this tyrant called sin.

John 8:35

Now a slave does not remain in the house into the age; a son remains into the age.

Paraphrase:  Let Me use this illustration.  In many families today, there are two kinds of people.  On the one hand, there are the house slaves.  We all know that these are not permanent members of the family.  At any time, the head of the house can fire them or even just send them away if he so chooses.  There are also, however, the children of the family who are permanent members of the family.  No father is allowed to turn his young children out of the house for any reason; such an act would be abominable.  My point is this; both are in the same house.  Now the same goes for the house of God.  In God’s house, there are slaves and children.  The slaves are those who refuse to submit to the truth.  Eventually, such ones will be cast out of the family house. (Matthew 8:12; 13:41, 48)  They have no right to the privileges of the family.  The children, however, are those who hear My teaching and embrace it with all their heart.  To such, God will give all the rights and privileges of sons and daughters in His family. (Matthew 13:43)

John 8:36

Therefore, if the Son might liberate you, really free you are.

Paraphrase:  Now you can better understand what I mean when I said that the truth will set you free.  I am talking about a liberty that is far more real than any kind of political or economic freedom.  The kind of liberty I am speaking of is a liberty from the bondage and tyranny of sin. (2 Corinthians 3:17-18)  It’s a liberty that makes you sons and daughters in God’s family. (Romans 8:21)  Now this kind of liberty can only be found with Me; unless you embrace My teaching and follow Me, you can never be truly free.

John 8:37

I know that the seed of Abraham you are, but you seek Me to kill because My word has not entered into you.

Paraphrase:  Yes, I know you are all quite confident that being children of Abraham will bring you favor with God, but think again.  To continue the metaphor I began above, yes, being a child of Abraham brings you into God’s house, but it does not make you a member of the family.  It does not entitle you to all the rights and privileges of the children of the family.  Clearly, you are interested in being My disciple, yet some of you are looking for ways to kill Me!  This can only mean that you have not really believed My teaching and that My word has no place in your life.  You’re just a slave in God’s house; and eventually, you will be cast out.

John 8:38

What I have seen with the Father, I speak; and you then, what you have heard from your Father, you do.

Paraphrase:  Now I am teaching you the things that I heard from My Father.  You are living by the teachings of your father.

The article sometimes functions as a possessive pronoun as seen here in του πατρος; see principle 18.

John 8:39

And they answered Him, “Our father is Abraham!”  Jesus said to them, “If a child of Abraham you are, the works of Abraham you would be doing.”

Paraphrase:  At this, the Jews were indignant.  “What do you mean ‘our Father’?  Our father is Abraham with whom the God of heaven made a covenant, and we are participants in Abraham’s covenant.  You can’t get any higher than that!”

“If you are children of Abraham, then why don’t you live like Abraham did?  He waited on God and believed every word that He spoke.  Even when God told him to sacrifice his son Isaac, Abraham promptly obeyed. (Genesis 22:3)  He never doubted that God’s word was the perfect truth, and he acted accordingly.  Now you have Someone with you who has come from God and has demonstrated this by unmistakable signs. (John 3:2; 14:11)

John 8:40

And now you are seeking to kill me, a man who the truth to you has spoken, which I heard from God.  This Abraham did not do.

Paraphrase:  He brings you a message from God; and unlike your supposed father Abraham, you are looking for ways to get rid of Him.  I have spoken to you the truth which I received from God Himself.  Why won’t you listen to the message God has for you?  This is something Abraham never did.  He always heard the word of God gladly and obeyed it without reservation, even when he himself could not understand it. (Hebrews 11:8, 19)

John 8:41

“You do the works of your father.”  They said to him, “We from fornication did not come to exist.  One Father we have, God.”

Paraphrase:  “I think you are mistaken,” Jesus said, “Yes, you are following the example of your father, but your father is not Abraham.”

Again, the Jews looked at Jesus deeply irritated with what He had just said.  One of the younger men stepped forward and retorted, “At least we are legitimate children,” he yelled, “and not born from fornication!”

One of the older Jews hushed the younger man and told him to step aside.  “Listen,” he said, “Technically, our father is not even Abraham.  Our father is God Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth.  Ultimately, it’s Him that we follow and trust.  We are not going to follow anyone but Him.”

Comments:

Brown writes:  The Jews may be saying, “We were not born illegitimate [but you were].” There is an early witness to Jewish attacks on the legitimacy of Jesus’ birth in Origen Against Celsus I 28 (GCS 2:79); and the Acts of Pilate II 3, has the Jews charging Jesus: “You were born of fornication.”  See Raymond Brown’s commentary on this verse.

John 8:42

Jesus said to them, “If God was your father, you would love Me, for I have come forth from God, and I am here, for neither from Myself, I have come, but that One sent Me.

Paraphrase:  “How can you claim God as your father!?” Jesus cried out.  “How can God be your father, if you hate the One who He sent to you!?  I have come from God, who you claim is your father, and I bring His word to you. (John 1:1)  I have not come to you on My own initiative; I come on a mission from the court of heaven.  God has sent Me to you.  Now when I bring His word to you, you reject it and call me a liar!  All the while, you still want Me to believe that God is your father!  It’s preposterous!”

John 8:43

On account of what, My word you do not understand?  Because you are not able to hear My word.

Paraphrase:  Why do you not understand what I am saying?  It is because your heart is hard (Jeremiah 6:10) and unwilling to submit to the truth.  For the mind that is set on one’s own beliefs and traditions is death, but the mind set on the truth (Proverbs 3:5-8) is life and peace.  The carnal mind is hostile toward God; it does not subject itself to God’s teaching; indeed, it is not even able to do so.  Those who are locked up in this bondage are not able to please God or to follow Him.  They have no heart for God. (Romans 8:6-8)

John 8:44

You, of your father the devil are, and the lusts of your father, you desire to do.  That one was a mankiller from the beginning and in the truth, he does not stand because truth is not in him.  When he might speak a lie, from his own he speaks because a liar he is and the father of it.

Paraphrase:  You don’t want to believe what I am saying.  Therefore, I must conclude that your father is not Abraham or God but actually the devil.  I say this because you are following his example.  The devil was a murderer from the beginning.  He does not have the truth and doesn’t live by the truth.  When he tells lies, he is doing what comes natural to him.  He lies because he is a liar, and all his disciples lie because the devil is the father of lies.
