Correlative Conjunction Function Example
either…or Presents alternatives Either stay or leave.
neither…nor Presents negative alternatives Neither Tom nor Jane came.
both…and Adds emphasis to both elements Both cats and dogs are welcome.
not only…but also Adds emphasis and additional information She’s not only smart but also kind.
whether…or Presents choices I don’t care whether you stay or go.

Notes:

  • Correlative Conjunctions: Work in pairs to connect balanced elements (words, phrases, or clauses).

 


Greek:

και… και… = both/and
μητε… μητε… = neither/nor
ουτε… ουτε… = neither/nor
ἢ… ἢ… = either/or

 


Hebrew:

The conjunction גַּם is often used to make a correlative conjunction in Hebrew as in Genesis 43:8. cf §628.
