John 5:1
After these things,

John 5:2
John 5:6
τοῦτον ἰδὼν ὁ Ἰησοῦς κατακείμενον, καὶ γνοὺς ὅτι πολὺν ἤδη χρόνον ἔχει, λέγει αὐτῷ, Θέλεις ὑγιὴς γενέσθαι;
John 5:7
John 5:12 Ἠρώτησαν ‹οὖν› αὐτόν, Τίς ἐστιν ὁ ἄνθρωπος ὁ εἰπών σοι, Ἆρον καὶ περιπάτει;
That one was a lamp burning and shining, and you desired to rejoice in his light for the hour.
Paraphrase: Now this is the second testimony to which I appeal. John was a true man of God who preached the truth of God fearlessly and boldly. His ministry was a searching and convicting word to all who heard him. You too were quite interested in his message since you sent messengers to him asking him questions. (Jn 1:19)
Comments:
See principle 19.
John 5:36
But I have a witness greater than John; for the works which the Father has given to me in order that I might complete them. These very works which I do testify about Me that the Father sent Me.
Paraphrase: But perhaps you are not willing to take John’s word for it. There is another witness which I can summon whose testimony you cannot dismiss so easily. In fact, this is not a single witness but amounts to many witnesses. These witness are the miracles which My Father sent Me to perform and which He has also enabled me to do. These provide a testimony which no one can miss, for no one is able to do these signs unless God is with him. (Jn 3:2) They send an unmistakable message that God, My Father, has sent Me on this mission.
Comments:
ὅτι = content οτι for μαρτυρεῖ
John 5:37
And the One who sent Me, that One is the Father, He has testified about Me. Neither His voice you ever heard, nor His form you have seen.
Paraphrase: Now it’s true that My Father never spoke to you in an audible voice or appeared to you in a visible way to tell you that I am His Messenger. For all that, however, He has spoken very clearly through these miracles which only He can enable someone to perform. These mighty acts are God Himself speaking and giving His infallible testimony that He sent Me.
Comments:
πέμψας is a substantival participle functioning as the subject of μεμαρτύρηκεν.
John 5:38
and His word you do not have in you remaining because whom that One sent, you do not believe this One.
Paraphrase: Now this is the reason why you cannot see the truth of both John’s witness and the combined witness of all the miracles which I do. God has spoken. He has given clear and unmistakable testimony that I am His Messenger and that My mission is His mission. You, however, have dismissed His testimony as false. You have basically made My Father out to be a liar. (1Jn 5:10) The result of this willful unbelief is that your eyes are blinded. (Jn 9:39; Rom 11:25)
Comments:
μένοντα is with λόγον; note the agreement.
John 5:39
You are searching the Scriptures because you think in them life eternal to have, and these are the ones testifying about Me.
Paraphrase: How commendable is your earnest and laborious study of the Scripture. Day after day you devote untold hours to the patient and detailed study of the Scriptures. You are searching for eternal life, and you are sure you will find it there. But to what purpose is all this labor? Every page of Scripture points to Me and to My mission, but you can’t see it. What a pity! Oh Jerusalem, Jerusalem, the city and people that killed the prophets and stoned God’s messengers; how often I would have saved you and your children, just as a hen rushes to gather her chicks under her wings…
Comments:
ἔχειν = complementary infinitive
αἱ μαρτυροῦσαι here is a predicate nominative.
John 5:40
and you did not desire to come to me in order that you might have life.
Paraphrase: …but you stubbornly refused to come and follow Me. (Mt 23:37) I would have given you life, and eternal life, but you judged yourselves unworthy of it. (Acts 13:46)
Comments:
John 5:41
Glory from men, I do not receive.
Paraphrase: Do you think I am doing this for publicity? to be famous? to become the leader of a new religious party? to gain your approval?
Comments:
John 5:42
but I know you that the love of God you do not have in you.
Paraphrase: All this makes one thing very obvious. You don’t really love God. You love yourselves and your own agenda. If God Himself stood before you and spoke to you, you wouldn’t believe Him.
Comments:
τὴν ἀγάπην τοῦ Θεοῦ = objective genitive
John 5:43
John 5:44
πῶς δύνασθε ὑμεῖς πιστεῦσαι, δόξαν παρὰ ἀλλήλων λαμβάνοντες, καὶ τὴν δόξαν τὴν παρὰ τοῦ μόνου Θεοῦ, οὐ ζητεῖτε;
John 5:47 εἰ δὲ τοῖς ἐκείνου γράμμασιν οὐ πιστεύετε, πῶς τοῖς ἐμοῖς ῥήμασιν πιστεύσετε;
