Genesis 37

Genesis 37:1

These are the generations of Jacob.  Joseph a son of seventeen year was pasturing, with his brothers, the flock, and he, the boy, with the sons of Bilhah and with the sons of Zilpah, wives of his father, and Joseph caused their evil report to go to their father.

Paraphrase:  Now I will relate the history of Jacob and his sons.  The story begins with Jacob’s son, Joseph who was seventeen years old at this time.  His job was to assist his brothers in bringing the sheep to good pasture and to ensure that they were well provided for.  The brothers he worked with were named Dan and Naphtali who were the children of Bilhah, Rachel’s maid.  Gad and Asher were also part of this work; they were the children of Zilpah, Leah’s maid.  Recall that Joseph’s father, Jacob, had four wives, Leah, Rachel, Bilhah, and Zilpah.

Genesis 37:3

Now Israel loved Joseph more than all his sons because a son of high age he was for him, and he made for him a fine coat.

Paraphrase:  Now Joseph was a special favorite of his father.  How highly Jacob prized Joseph especially since he had been born from his beloved and now deceased wife, Rachel.  Also that Joseph was born to him in his older years.  All of these things caused Jacob to love Joseph more than his other children.  Jacob then made for Joseph a special coat of fine cloth.  It was a beautiful piece of clothing and made it clear to everyone that Joseph was his father’s favorite.

Note the comparative use of the preposition min.

See bottom of p436 for this tunic.

Genesis 37:4

and his brothers saw that their father loved him more than all his brothers and they hated him, and they were not able to speak peace.

Paraphrase:  All of this favoritism was not missed by Joseph’s brothers.  They began to burn with envy and hatred toward their younger brother.  They deeply resented this favoritism on the part of their father; and as a result, they no longer had anything good to say to their younger brother.

Genesis 37:5

and Joseph dreamed a dream, and he revealed to his brothers, and they added still more to hate him.

Paraphrase:  On one occasion, Joseph had a dream.  In the morning, he told his brothers what he had dreamed.  This dream only caused their hatred to grow all the hotter.

Paraphrase:  Now this is what Joseph told his brothers which filled them with such disgust for their younger brother.

Genesis 37:7

and behold, we were sheafing sheaves in the middle of a field, and behold, my sheaf rose and also stood up, and behold, your sheaves came around and fell down before my sheaf.

Paraphrase:  One day, we were working hard in the fields tying up bundles of cut wheat.  As we worked along, I turned back to see an astonishing sight.  The sheaf I had just bound up had gotten up and was standing tall in the middle of the field.  The sheaves you men had bound were all coming to my sheaf and gathering around it.  Then, they all fell down on their faces before my sheaf.

Genesis 37:8

and his brothers said to him, “Will you really reign over us and will you really rule us?

Paraphrase:  His brothers weren’t slow to understand the meaning of the dream, and they were outraged.  “What kind of arrogant fool are you?!”  they snapped back.  “You really think that you are going to be king over us and rule us?  You need to get your head out of the clouds and come back down to earth.  Start being sensible, and stop this irrational megalomania.  If you weren’t so lazy, you wouldn’t have time to dream up this nonsense.”

Comments:

Note the infinitive absolute.

Note the interrogative marker הֲ used with אִם which marks a double question; see §150h.

Genesis 37:9

and again he dreamed another dream, and he related it to his brothers, and he said, “Behold, I dreamed a dream again; and behold, the sun and the moon and one and ten stars were bowing to me.”

Paraphrase:  Shortly after this, Joseph had another dream.  In this dream, the sun, moon, and stars all bowed down to him and paid their respects to him.  Again, Joseph shared his dream with his brothers.

Genesis 37:10

and he related to his father and to his brothers, and his father rebuked him, and said to him, “What is this dream which you dreamed?  Will we really come, I and your mother, and your brothers to bow before you to the ground?

Paraphrase:  This time, however, he also told the dream to his father, along with his brothers.  Upon hearing this, Jacob was astonished at Joseph’s arrogance.  “Really, Joseph, isn’t this a bit farfetched?  Do you really think that you are understanding this dream properly by thinking that some day, your mother and I, along with your brothers, are going to pay our respects to you by falling down on the ground before you like the stars in your dream?  Don’t you think you might be misunderstanding something here?”

and his brothers were envious against him, but his father kept the word.

Paraphrase:  When his brothers saw how gently Jacob dealt with Joseph, their envy was increased to the breaking point.  They hated Joseph more than ever.  Jacob, however, could not get this dream out of his mind.  He kept wondering what it might mean.

and Israel said to Joseph, “Are not your brothers pasturing in Shechem?  Go and I will send you to them.”  And he said to him, “Behold me.”

Paraphrase:  Jacob, also known as Israel, was wondering how they were getting along and decided to send Joseph to check on them.  “Look,” he said to Joseph, “your brothers are tending to my flock near the city of Shechem.  I would like you to go and see how they are doing.”  “Sure thing,” said Joseph.

and he said to him, “Go, please, see the welfare of your brothers and the welfare of the flock and cause word to return to me.”  And he sent him from the valley of Hebron and he went to Shechem.

Paraphrase:  So Jacob told Joseph to check on the welfare of his brothers and the flock.  “Once you find them and see how they are getting on, return to me and report on how they are doing.”  So Joseph hurried off to find the brothers.  He passed through the valley of Hebron and made for the city of Shechem.

Come, let us sell him to the Ishmaelites and our hand let us not be on him because our brother in our flesh he is and his brothers listened.
