What is the book of Genesis?

This is the first book of the Bible and gives to us the origin of many different things.

What does the word “genesis” mean?

The word means “origin” or “beginning.”  In the book of Genesis, the name comes from the first word which in Hebrew is בְּרֵאשִׁית and which means, “In the beginning…”.  The LXX translated the Hebrew text of Genesis 2:4 into Greek using the Greek word γενέσεως from which our English word “Genesis” is derived.

אֵלֶּה תוֹלְדוֹת הַשָּׁמַיִם וְהָאָרֶץ αὕτη ἡ βίβλος γενέσεως οὐρανοῦ καὶ γῆς This is the account of the heavens and the earth.

Who wrote Genesis?

The book of Genesis along with the entire Pentateuch was written by Moses; see here.
