Genesis 46

Genesis 46:1

and Israel set out and all what was to him and went to Beer-sheba and sacrificed a sacrifice to the God of his father, Isaac.

Paraphrase:  Once everything was in order, the brothers packed their families into the carts which Pharoah had provided and began the long journey back to Egypt.  Jacob was also helped into the lead cart and gave the order to move out.  After travelling for some time, they reached Beersheba where Jacob called the entire caravan to a halt.  He stood up in the cart and gazed at the countryside.  The brothers looked back at him, puzzled.  “Boys,” he said, “Many years ago, God Almighty called our father Abraham and told him to go and to sacrifice his son Isaac. (Genesis 22:2)  Our father was in great distress but, without hesitation, he obeyed the divine command.  As he was about to strike the fatal blow, the angel of YHWH called out to him, stopped him from killing Isaac, and provided a substitute.  After this incident, Abraham settled in this very countryside through which we are now travelling. (Genesis 22:19)  This is the very land where my father Isaac was raised from childhood.  Here it was where he first met Rebekah and took her for his wife. (Genesis 24:67)  This was the land where our father, Isaac, made a covenant with Abimelech, king of the Philistines. (Genesis 26:28)  And most important, this is the place where the Almighty God came down and gave to our father the very same promise He had made previously to Abraham.  “I am the God of your father Abraham; Do not fear, for I am with you. I will bless you, and multiply your descendants, for the sake of My servant Abraham.” (Genesis 26:24) are the very words which YHWH spoke to our father on that occasion.  Now, my sons, I am not willing to move forward until I know that God is with me.  He was the One who instructed me to return to this land after my time with Laban. (Genesis 31:3)  He was the One who rescued me from Esau (Genesis 32:9; 33:16), and this is the land He promised to me (Genesis 28:13), not the land of Egypt.  Now I am not willing to proceed until I have assurance that this is what God would have us to do.  How can I leave the land of my fathers and the land which God has covenanted to give us?  I remember my father, Isaac, also resolved to go down to Egypt, but God told him no. (Genesis 26:2)  We will spend the night here.  We will offer sacrifices to God and ask Him to make known His will to us.  Both my father and grandfather called on God here (Genesis 21:33; 26:25); why shouldn’t we do so as well?”

To this, the brothers agreed.  They helped everyone out of the wagons and immediately set about offering sacrifices to God and praying that He would show them the way forward.

Genesis 46:2

and God said to Israel in a vision of the night, and He said, “Jacob, Jacob.”  and he said, “Behold me.”

Paraphrase:  That night, God heard their prayer and appeared to Jacob in a vision.  While Jacob was sleeping, God called out to him, “Jacob, Jacob!”  “Yes, I am here.” Jacob replied.

Genesis 46:3

and He said, “I am El, God of your fathers; do not fear to go down to Egypt for a great nation, I will make you there.

Paraphrase:  “I have heard your prayer, and I will gladly give you the leading you seek.  I know you are anxious to leave the land I promised you, but don’t be so.  I want you to go to Egypt and to meet with Joseph.  I want you to settle in the land he carves out for you.  There in that land, I will make you a great and mighty nation.  It is true that Egypt is not your homeland, nor is it the land I promised you.  For all that, however, I still want you to go there and to settle.  Don’t forget what I told your father, Abraham, many years ago.  In the vision I gave him, I told him that his descendants would be strangers in a land that was not theirs.  They would be enslaved and oppressed for four hundred years.  I also told him on that occasion that I would judge that nation and that eventually My people would leave this country carrying a great quantity of goods with them. (Genesis 15:13-14)

Genesis 46:4

I will go down with you to Egypt and will cause you to go up also to go up, and Joseph will place his hand on your eyes.

Paraphrase:  Now, do not think that I am going to abandon you in Egypt or that I will fail to keep the promise I made to you and to your fathers. (Romans 11:29)  When you leave the land of Canaan, I will be right there with you every step of the way.  I give you My promise; you will surely return to this land in due time; I myself will see to it.  It is true that you will die in Egypt, but do not fear.  Joseph, your beloved son, will be right next to you as you leave this life in peace. (Genesis 37:35)  Furthermore, as I promised, Joseph will carry your body back to this land and will bury you in the grave next to your father and grandfather.

Genesis 46:5

and Jacob got up from Beer-Sheba, and the sons of Israel lifted Jacob, their father and their children and their women into the carts which Pharaoh sent to carry him.

Paraphrase:  The next morning, Jacob reported to his sons that God’s will was for them to continue on to Egypt.  The sons heard this news with gladness and thanksgiving.  Once everyone was situated in the wagons, they turned their faces towards Egypt.  They were grateful to God for His leading and grateful to Pharaoh for providing them with wagons.
