Matthew 25:1
Τότε ὁμοιωθήσεται ἡ βασιλεία τῶν οὐρανῶν δέκα παρθένοις, αἵτινες λαβοῦσαι τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν, ἐξῆλθον εἰς ὑπάντησιν τοῦ νυμφίου.

πέντε δὲ ἐξ αὐτῶν ἦσαν μωραὶ, καὶ πέντε φρόνιμοι.

χρονίζοντος δὲ τοῦ νυμφίου, ἐνύσταξαν πᾶσαι καὶ ἐκάθευδον.

Μέσης δὲ νυκτὸς, κραυγὴ γέγονεν· Ἰδοὺ, ὁ νυμφίος! ἐξέρχεσθε εἰς ἀπάντησιν

Matthew 25:7
Τότε ἠγέρθησαν πᾶσαι αἱ παρθένοι ἐκεῖναι καὶ ἐκόσμησαν τὰς λαμπάδας ἑαυτῶν.
Matthew 25:8
αἱ δὲ μωραὶ ταῖς φρονίμοις εἶπαν, Δότε ἡμῖν ἐκ τοῦ ἐλαίου ὑμῶν, ὅτι αἱ λαμπάδες ἡμῶν σβέννυνται.

Ἀπεκρίθησαν δὲ αἱ φρόνιμοι, λέγουσαι, Μή¦Ποτε οὐ μὴ ἀρκέσῃ ἡμῖν καὶ ὑμῖν. πορεύεσθε μᾶλλον πρὸς τοὺς πωλοῦντας, καὶ ἀγοράσατε ἑαυταῖς.
Matthew 25:10
Ἀπερχομένων δὲ αὐτῶν ἀγοράσαι, ἦλθεν ὁ νυμφίος, καὶ αἱ ἕτοιμοι εἰσῆλθον μετ’ αὐτοῦ εἰς τοὺς γάμους· καὶ ἐκλείσθη ἡ θύρα.
Matthew 25:11
Ὕστερον δὲ ἔρχονται καὶ αἱ λοιπαὶ παρθένοι, λέγουσαι, Κύριε, κύριε, ἄνοιξον ἡμῖν!
Matthew 25:12
Ὁ δὲ ἀποκριθεὶς εἶπεν, Ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐκ οἶδα ὑμᾶς.
Matthew 25:13
Γρηγορεῖτε οὖν, ὅτι οὐκ οἴδατε τὴν ἡμέραν, οὐδὲ τὴν ὥραν.
Matthew 25:14
Ὥσπερ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος ἀποδημῶν ἐκάλεσεν τοὺς ἰδίους δούλους, καὶ παρέδωκεν αὐτοῖς τὰ ὑπάρχοντα αὐτοῦ.
Matthew 25:15
καὶ ᾧ μὲν ἔδωκεν πέντε τάλαντα, ᾧ δὲ δύο, ᾧ δὲ ἕν, ἑκάστῳ κατὰ τὴν ἰδίαν δύναμιν· καὶ ἀπεδήμησεν.
Matthew 25:16
Εὐθέως Πορευθεὶς, ὁ τὰ πέντε τάλαντα λαβὼν ἠργάσατο ἐν αὐτοῖς καὶ ἐκέρδησεν ἄλλα πέντε.
Matthew 25:17
ὡσαύτως, ὁ τὰ δύο ἐκέρδησεν ἄλλα δύο.
Matthew 25:18
ὁ δὲ τὸ ἓν λαβὼν, ἀπελθὼν, ὤρυξεν γῆν καὶ ἔκρυψεν τὸ ἀργύριον τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ.
Matthew 25:19
Μετὰ δὲ πολὺν χρόνον, ἔρχεται ὁ κύριος τῶν δούλων ἐκείνων καὶ συναίρει λόγον μετ’ αὐτῶν.
Matthew 25:20
καὶ προσελθὼν, ὁ τὰ πέντε τάλαντα λαβὼν προσήνεγκεν ἄλλα πέντε τάλαντα, λέγων, Κύριε, πέντε τάλαντά μοι παρέδωκας. ἴδε, ἄλλα πέντε τάλαντα ἐκέρδησα.
Matthew 25:21
Ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ, Εὖ, δοῦλε ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ! ἐπὶ ὀλίγα ἦς πιστός· ἐπὶ πολλῶν σε καταστήσω. εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν χαρὰν τοῦ κυρίου σου!
Matthew 25:22
Προσελθὼν ‹δὲ› καὶ ὁ τὰ δύο τάλαντα, εἶπεν, Κύριε, δύο τάλαντά μοι παρέδωκας. ἴδε, ἄλλα δύο τάλαντα ἐκέρδησα.

Ἔφη αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ, Εὖ, δοῦλε ἀγαθὲ καὶ πιστέ! ἐπὶ ὀλίγα ἦς πιστός· ἐπὶ πολλῶν σε καταστήσω. εἴσελθε εἰς τὴν χαρὰν τοῦ κυρίου σου!
Matthew 25:24
Προσελθὼν δὲ καὶ ὁ τὸ ἓν τάλαντον εἰληφὼς, εἶπεν, Κύριε, ἔγνων σε, ὅτι σκληρὸς εἶ ἄνθρωπος, θερίζων ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρας, καὶ συνάγων ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισας.
Matthew 25:25
καὶ φοβηθεὶς, ἀπελθὼν, ἔκρυψα τὸ τάλαντόν σου ἐν τῇ γῇ. ἴδε, ἔχεις τὸ σόν.

Ἀποκριθεὶς δὲ, ὁ κύριος αὐτοῦ εἶπεν αὐτῷ, Πονηρὲ δοῦλε καὶ ὀκνηρέ! ᾔδεις ὅτι θερίζω ὅπου οὐκ ἔσπειρα, καὶ συνάγω ὅθεν οὐ διεσκόρπισα.

ἔδει σε οὖν βαλεῖν τὰ ἀργύριά μου τοῖς τραπεζίταις, καὶ ἐλθὼν, ἐγὼ ἐκομισάμην ἂν τὸ ἐμὸν σὺν τόκῳ.

Ἄρατε οὖν ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ τὸ τάλαντον, καὶ δότε τῷ ἔχοντι τὰ δέκα τάλαντα.
Matthew 25:29
τῷ γὰρ ἔχοντι, παντὶ δοθήσεται, καὶ περισσευθήσεται· τοῦ δὲ μὴ ἔχοντος, καὶ ὃ ἔχει ἀρθήσεται ἀπ’ αὐτοῦ.

καὶ τὸν ἀχρεῖον δοῦλον, ἐκβάλετε εἰς τὸ σκότος τὸ ἐξώτερον· ἐκεῖ ἔσται ὁ κλαυθμὸς καὶ ὁ βρυγμὸς τῶν ὀδόντων.

Matthew 25:31
Ὅταν δὲ ἔλθῃ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐν τῇ δόξῃ αὐτοῦ, καὶ πάντες οἱ ἄγγελοι μετ’ αὐτοῦ, τότε καθίσει ἐπὶ θρόνου δόξης αὐτοῦ.
Now when the Son of Man comes in His glory and all the angels with Him, then He will sit on a throne of His glory.
Paraphrase: Now I’ve told you these two stories to illustrate what the last judgment will be. Now listen while I tell you in plain language, what the coming of the Son of Man will be. You can be sure that He will come in unsurpassed glory such as was never seen before on earth. All the myriads of angels will be His attendants, and He will sit on a throne of immense glory and radiance.

Matthew 25:32
καὶ συναχθήσονται ἔμπροσθεν αὐτοῦ πάντα τὰ ἔθνη, καὶ ἀφορίσει αὐτοὺς ἀπ’ ἀλλήλων, ὥσπερ ὁ ποιμὴν ἀφορίζει τὰ πρόβατα ἀπὸ τῶν ἐρίφων.
And they will gather before Him all the nations, and He will divide them from one another just as the shepherd separates the sheep away from the goats.
Paraphrase: Then the last trumpet shall summon all the peoples of the earth to the last and final judgment. The angels will gather together the nations of the earth and set them before King Jesus. Then, Jesus will make a separation in the same way that a shepherd divides the sheep in his flock from the goats.

Matthew 25:33
καὶ στήσει τὰ μὲν πρόβατα ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ, τὰ δὲ ἐρίφια ἐξ εὐωνύμων.
and He shall place, in fact, the sheep at His right and the goats at the left.
Paraphrase: He will move the sheep to His right side, while the goats will be directed to His left.

Matthew 25:34
Τότε ἐρεῖ ὁ Βασιλεὺς τοῖς ἐκ δεξιῶν αὐτοῦ, Δεῦτε, οἱ εὐλογημένοι τοῦ Πατρός μου, κληρονομήσατε τὴν ἡτοιμασμένην ὑμῖν βασιλείαν ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου.
Then, the King will say to those at His right, “Come, blessed of My Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the founding of the world.
Paraphrase: Once this separation is complete, King Jesus will hold out His hands to those on His right and say, “Come, for you have been blessed by My Father. You are the ones whom My Father gave to Me in the eternal covenant. (Titus 1:2; Luke 22:29) I came to this earth and gave My life as a ransom for you. (Matthew 20:28) Now enter in and take possession of the kingdom which My Father has set aside for you, before the time when the world was created.”
Comments:
The usual expression is ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, “from the foundation of the world,” Luke 11:50; Hebrews 4:3; 9:26; cf. Epistle of Barnabas 5:5 in the sense of “at (or immediately after) the foundation of the world,” while in passages like Matthew 25:34; Revelation 13:8; 17:8 the meaning of ἀπὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου approximates to that of πρὸ καταβολῆς κόσμου, “before the foundation of the world,” John 17:24 (πρὸ τοῦ τὸν κόσμον εἶναι, John 17:5) in the sense of pre-existence, cf. also Ephesians 1:4; 1 Peter 1:20. Matthew 25:35
ἐπείνασα γὰρ, καὶ ἐδώκατέ μοι φαγεῖν· ἐδίψησα, καὶ ἐποτίσατέ με· ξένος ἤμην, καὶ συνηγάγετέ με·
For I was hungry and you gave to me to eat; I was thirsty and you gave Me drink; stranger I was and you gathered Me.
Paraphrase: You might wonder how it is that I know who were chosen and blessed by My Father. Here is how I know, and here is how you can know as well. I know this because of your own personal character and the lifestyle you lead. Let me give you an example. There was a time when I was hungry; not Me personally but those members of My kingdom who are poor, weak, and unable to provide for themselves. Now you noticed these people, and you acted to relieve them from their distress. If they were hungry, you gave them food. If they were thirsty, you gave them something to drink. If they were homeless, you invited them to come and stay with you.
Comments:
The actions here cannot be the basis for receiving the kingdom since Jesus has just said in the previous verse that the kingdom was “inherited,” not earned.
συνάγω or “gathered” can have the meaning of invite.
Matthew 25:36
γυμνὸς, καὶ περιεβάλετέ με· ἠσθένησα, καὶ ἐπεσκέψασθέ με· ἐν φυλακῇ ἤμην, καὶ ἤλθατε πρός με.
Naked and you threw around Me; weak and you visited Me; in prison, I was, and you came to Me.
Paraphrase: If they were naked, you put clothes on them; some were weak and feeble, and you encouraged them with a visit; others were in prison, and you went to the prison and sat with them for a while.

- To give drink to the thirsty;
- To clothe the naked;
- To harbor the harborless;
- To visit the sick;
- To ransom the captive;
- To bury the dead.
Matthew 25:37
Τότε ἀποκριθήσονται αὐτῷ οἱ δίκαιοι, λέγοντες, Κύριε, πότε σε εἴδομεν πεινῶντα, καὶ ἐθρέψαμεν; ἢ διψῶντα, καὶ ἐποτίσαμεν;
Then the righteous will answer Him saying, “Lord, when did we see You hungering and we gave food? or thirsty and we gave drink?
Paraphrase: Then the righteous ones at Christ’s right hand, those whom Jesus said were blessed by His Father, will hear this and will look at Him with amazement. “Lord,” they will respond, “What are you talking about? When did we ever see you hungry, and we stopped and gave you some food? Or when did we see you thirsty, and we gave you some water?

πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ξένον, καὶ συνηγάγομεν; ἢ γυμνὸν, καὶ περιεβάλομεν;
And when did we see You a stranger and invite? Or naked and clothed?
Paraphrase: And when was there a time when we noticed that you were friendless and homeless and we invited You into our home? Or when did we see You naked, and we brought you clothing?

πότε δέ σε εἴδομεν ἀσθενοῦντα ἢ ἐν φυλακῇ, καὶ ἤλθομεν πρός σε;
And when did we see You weak or in prison and we came to You?
