Genesis 47

Genesis 47:1

and Joseph went and revealed to Pharaoh and said, “My father and my brothers and their flocks and their cattle and all what is to them have come from the land of Canaan and behold, they are in the land of Goshen.

Paraphrase:  So Joseph left his family in Goshen and returned to the royal palace.  There he told Pharaoh that his family had arrived and that, even as they were speaking, they were getting settled in the region of Goshen.  Pharaoh was very interested and told Joseph that he wanted to meet his family.

and from the whole number of his brothers, he took five men and place them before Pharaoh.

Paraphrase:  So Joseph returned to Goshen and invited five of his brothers to come and meet Pharaoh.  When they arrived back at the palace, Joseph led them into Pharaoh’s presence.

Genesis 47:3

and Pharaoh said to his brothers, “What is your occupation?”  and they said to Pharaoh, “Shepherds of flocks are your servants and not only we but also our fathers.

Paraphrase:  Pharaoh looked at them with great interest.  “What do you men do for a living?” he asked.  “We are shepherds,” Judah answered, “Just as all our fathers and grandfathers were.”

Genesis 47:4

and they said to Pharaoh, “As sojourners in the land, we have come because there is no pasture for the flock, which is to your servants, because heavy is the famine in the land of Canaan; and now, please let your servants dwell in the land of Goshen.

Paraphrase:  “We have come here, not as permanent residents,” continued Judah, “but so that we can escape the severe famine which is causing so much hardship in the land of Canaan.  Even the pastures, upon which our flocks depend, are dried up, and it is impossible to keep our flocks alive under these conditions.  We ask, your majesty, that we might be allowed to live temporarily in the land of Goshen where the pastures are still green and will serve well to maintain our flocks.

and Pharaoh said to Joseph, saying “Your father and your brothers have come to you.”

Paraphrase:  Then Pharaoh turned to Joseph.  “What a wonderful thing has happened to you.  Your entire family is reunited after such a long absence and so many hardships.”

Genesis 47:6

The land of Egypt before you she is; in the best of the land settle with your fathers and with your brothers, and they will live in the land of Goshen and if you know and there is among them men of strength, then make them supervisors of cattle on what is to me.

Paraphrase:  Now don’t delay any longer; I am giving you all the finest pasture lands in Egypt; there is nothing better than what you’ll find in Goshen.  It’s all yours; your father and brothers are all welcome to it; your animals will love it.  Furthermore, since you are such experts at animal husbandry, perhaps there are some skilled men among you who would be willing to take charge of all my herds?  As you probably know, no Egyptian wants the job. (Genesis 46:34)  If you would take charge of all my herds, I am sure they would flourish far better under your care more than they do under their current managers.

Genesis 47:7

And Joseph came with Jacob, his father, and caused him to stand before Pharaoh, and Jacob blessed Pharaoh.

Paraphrase:  “Why did you not bring your father with you?” asked Pharaoh, “I was hoping to see him too.  Pay me another visit soon and bring him with you.”  Joseph agreed and spoke to Jacob about it.  Shortly thereafter, Joseph returned to the palace this time with Jacob.  Just as he had done with his brothers, Joseph led his father into the royal hall and presented him with great respect and honor to Pharaoh.  Pharaoh greeted him; and Jacob blessed Pharaoh in return.

Genesis 47:9

And Jacob said to Pharaoh, “The days of the years of my sojourning are three and a hundred of year; few and evil are the days of the years of my life, and they have not reached the days of the years of my fathers in the days of their sojourning.

Paraphrase:  “I am 130 years old,” he replied.  “My life has been one long and difficult pilgrimage, a constant traveling from place to place.  I was born in Beersheba (Genesis 22:19; 25:26; 26:1, 23) but travelled to Padanaram where I met my wives. (Genesis 28:5)  I lived there for some time, but finally moved back to Canaan and settled in Succoth (Genesis 33:17) and later in a town called Shechem. (Genesis 33:18)  After this, I moved to Bethel (Genesis 35:6) where I stayed a short while before moving on to another town called Ephrath. (Genesis 35:16)  This is where my dark night of sorrow began since it was at this place that my beloved wife, Rachel, died in childbirth. (Genesis 35:19)  My sorrows only increased after we moved to Migdal-eder where my oldest son committed adultery with my concubine. (Genesis 35:22)  Finally, I made a longer term settlement in Hebron where, at the time, my father, Isaac, lived (Genesis 35:27) and where he eventually died. (Genesis 35:29)  Now, I have moved again and have come into your country, the land of Egypt, with a promise from the Great God of heaven that I will die here. (Genesis 46:4)  It may seem to you like a long life, but all these hardships have brought my life to a close sooner than both my grandfather’s (Genesis 25:7) or my father’s. (Genesis 35:28)
