As I live, an utterance of Lord YHWH, if not with a strong hand and with a stretched out arm and with wrath being poured out, and I will rule over you.

Paraphrase:  Now by My Own Life, says YHWH, the Great King of heaven and earth, I make this declaration.  If I fail to rule over My people with My iron fist and by My powerful arm and by My wrath being poured out on them for their unfaithfulness, then I am not the eternal God who lives and reigns forever. (Daniel 4:34; Revelation 1:18; 4:9-10)

Comments:

See the oath in Genesis 42:15-16.

predicate adjective precedes the noun it modifies, agree with its noun in gender , number, but not definiteness.

Charnock (p297):  If God be eternal, His covenant will be so. It is founded upon the eternity of God; the oath whereby he confirms it, is by his life. Since there is none greater than himself, he swears by himself, Hebrews 6:13, or by his own life, which he engageth, together with his eternity, for the full performance, so that if he lives for ever, the covenant shall not be disannulled, it is an immutable counsel, Hebrews 6:16-17. The immutability of his counsel follows the immutability of his nature. Immutability and eternity go hand in hand together.

Ezekiel 20:34

and I will cause you to go forth from the peoples and will gather you from the lands in which you were scattered by a strong hand and a stretched out arm and by wrath being poured out.

Paraphrase:  Furthermore, I will surely gather up My people from all the countries to which they were scattered when I punished them for their unfaithfulness.  I will bring them all together again and lead them out of those nations.  I will do this with an iron fist, by My powerful arm, and with an outpouring of My terrible anger upon them.

and I will cause you to go to the wilderness of the peoples and I will judge you there, face to face,

Paraphrase:  I will lead you out of those nations and march you straight into the wilderness.  There, I will drag you into court and set out the charges against you.  I will force you to look Me in the face and to give an account of your actions.  You will not escape; your excuses will come to an end; you will surely face these charges and answer for them.

Ezekiel 20:36

just as I judged your fathers in the wilderness of the land of Egypt, thus I will judge you.  An utterance of Lord YHWH.

Paraphrase:  You will remember what I did to your fathers after I delivered them from of Egypt and led them to the borders of the promised land.  They did not think that I was strong enough to defeat the kings who ruled the land of Canaan. (Numbers 13:30-31; 14:6-9)  For their unbelief, I punished My people severely; I turned them back from the land, which I had promised them, and forced them to march through the empty and dry wilderness until that entire generation died. (Numbers 14:21-23, 34; Hebrews 3:7-11)  Then, I also brought charges against the ten spies who doubted My power; I declared them guilty and struck them dead. (Numbers 14:36-37)  Then, when some of Israel decided to disregard My command to turn away from Canaan and resolved to take Canaan on their own initiative, I gave them over to their enemies for destruction. (Numbers 14:45)  This is the word of YHWH, the Great King of heaven and earth.

and I will cause you to pass over under the rod and will cause you to enter into the bond of the covenant.

Paraphrase:  Now those of you who remain, will pass by Me.  I will tap each of you with My staff and count you off just as a shepherd counts each of his sheep to ensure that none are lost. (Leviticus 27:32; Jeremiah 33:13)  I will take you and bring you into a new and better covenant. (Jeremiah 31:31; Hebrews 8:8, 13; 12:24)  I will set the terms of this covenant before you, and you will gladly accept them and resolve to follow Me faithfully. (Isaiah 44:5)

and I will purge from you the rebellious and those transgressing against Me; from the land of their sojournings, I will cause them to go forth; and to the land of Israel, he will not enter, and you will know that I am YHWH.

Paraphrase:  I will drive out of your midst anyone who refuses to accept the terms of this covenant.  Those who persist in their rebellion and love their sin will be brought out of exile, but they will never enter the promised land.  I will bring them into the wilderness to face trial, and there they will come to a bitter end.  There, they will come to realize, to their eternal regret, that I am the Great Sovereign of heaven and earth, that I am the overflowing fountain of all good. (James 1:17)  I am the bread of life, and anyone who comes to Me shall not hunger, and all who believe in Me shall never thirst (John 6:35), but those who are far from Me shall perish. (Psalm 73:27)

Ezekiel 20:39

and you, oh house of Israel, thus says Lord YHWH, each, his idols, go, serve and afterwards, if you will not be listening to me, but the Name of My Holiness, you will not profane again by your gifts and by your idols.

Paraphrase: So now listen to Me, oh house of Israel.  “Thus says YHWH, the Great Sovereign of heaven and earth.  Go, get your idols, set them up, and worship them.  If you have no heart for Me and for My covenant, then go and destroy yourself with your idols. (Amos 4:4; Jeremiah 44:25; Romans 1:24)  Let the unrighteous one continue in his unrighteousness; let the one who is vile continue to be vile; let the one who is righteous continue in his righteousness; let the one who is holy continue to be holy. (Revelation 22:11)  But know this for sure; never again will I allow you to drag My Name through the dust by your abominable worship.  You bring gifts to your idols; you fall down before them and worship them.  Do you think that I don’t see it? (Jeremiah 23:24)  I do see it, and I will not tolerate it any longer.  I will be treated as holy by My people (Leviticus 10:3) and My Name will be regarded as holy by all the nations. (Ezekiel 20:41)

Top of left column (p39):  Wherever any personal pronoun constitutes the subject of a sentence, it should be suffixed to this word, as אֵינֶנִּי “I (am, was, will be), not;” אֵינְךָ “thou (art, wast, wilt be) not;” אֵינֵךְ, אֵינֶנּוּ, אֵינֶנָּה, אֵינְכֶם, אֵינָם, and in the plural form (as if from אֵינִים) אֵינֵימוֹ, אֵינֵמוֹ, Psalm 59:14; 73:5.

Ezekiel 20:40

For on My holy mountain, on the mountain of the height of Israel, says Lord YHWH, there all the house of Israel will serve Me, all in the land there.  I will accept them; and there, I will look for your offerings and the chief of your portions with all your holy things.

Paraphrase:  But now this faithful remnant, I will bring them into the promised land.  They will build houses and plant vineyards in the holy city.  There on My holy mountain, they will come to worship Me.  All of them without exception will come to My glorious temple.  Some will come with weeping, others with repentance and prayers (Jeremiah 31:9), but they will all come.  Now in that place, I will come down amongst them and accept their gifts.  I will not turn from them in disgust. (Ezekiel 20:3)  No, I will welcome them and rejoice over them. (Jeremiah 32:41)  I will take delight in their offerings and sacrifices (Leviticus 1:9) and all the other things which they dedicate to Me.

With a soothing smell, I will be pleased with you, when I cause you to go forth from the peoples, and I will gather you from the lands to which you were scattered and I will be sanctified in you before the eyes of the nations.

Paraphrase:  I will come down and eat the peace offering with you. (Leviticus 3:5)  I will take great pleasure in receiving these gifts from you.  My anger will be no more; we will live together in joyful harmony.  All this will happen on that day when I call you out of the nations to which you were scattered.  What a happy day when I gather you up from all the different places where you were exiled.  Then, you will come and dwell in this land which I promised to your fathers; and through your holiness, My Holy Name will be exalted in plain view of all the nations.  Then they will know that I am YHWH, the Great Sovereign of heaven and earth.
