substantive

A substantive is any part of speech that performs a noun function. For example, the adjective “good” in this sentence.

The good was something often studied by the ancient philosophers.

“good” is an adjective, yet here, it is the subject of the verb “was”. Therefore, we would call “good” a substantive.

cf. substantival participle

“There is a danger of being a Pharisee when thou ceasest being a Publican.” –Anthony Burgess
