hebrew verb diagnostics

The following are four helpful clues to assist in the parsing of the prefix forms of the verb:

  1. A qal prefix form will have a hiriq under the prefix.     יִשְׁאַל
  2. A piel prefix form will have a sheva under the prefix.    וַיְבָרֶךְ
  3. A hifil prefix form will have a patah under the prefix.    וַיַּשְׁאִלוּ
  4. A nifal prefix form will have dagesh in the first letter with a qamats under it (cf nifal triangle).    יִקָּרֵא

“There is a danger of being a Pharisee when thou ceasest being a Publican.” –Anthony Burgess
