Λαλούντων δὲ αὐτῶν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν ἐπέστησαν αὐτοῖς οἱ ἱερεῖς καὶ ὁ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ καὶ οἱ Σαδδουκαῖοι,
Now while they were speaking to the people, the priests and the captain of the temple and the Sadducees came up to them.
Paraphrase: Now while Peter and the other apostles were teaching and explaining to the people the truth about Jesus, suddenly a group of priests and Sadducees showed up. They had with them the captain of the temple guard.
Λαλούντων δὲ αὐτῶν πρὸς τὸν λαὸν = genitive absolute
Apparently, the number of the priests were greatly diminished after the return from the exile. Other Levites who were not priests were brought on to assist the priests in their work. The temple guard would have been staffed by these Levites. Gloag writes that some have suggested that ὁ στρατηγὸς τοῦ ἱεροῦ was the captain of the Roman garrison stationed in the castle of Antonia. The story as told here, however, does not indicate that the Romans were at all even interested in this affair. “The captain of the temple was more probably the Jewish priest in command of the Levitical guard of the temple. This officer appears from Josephus to have been a person of distinction among the Jews. The charge with which he was entrusted, that of guarding the temple, was one of great importance and influence. He is mentioned in 2 Macc. 3:4 under the title of προστάτης τοῦ ἱεροῦ; he is again alluded to in the Acts 5:24, and is frequently mentioned by Josephus. source
διαπονούμενοι διὰ τὸ διδάσκειν αὐτοὺς τὸν λαὸν καὶ καταγγέλλειν ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ τὴν ἀνάστασιν τὴν ἐκ νεκρῶν,
Being disturbed because they taught the people and proclaimed in Jesus the resurrection, even the resurrection from the dead.
Paraphrase: They were irritated that the apostles were presuming to teach the people which they were quite sure was their sole prerogative. Furthermore, the Sadducees were especially upset that the apostles were teaching that Jesus had risen from the dead (Matthew 22:23) and that, as a result of this, all those who believe in Jesus were given the assurance that they too would return to life after their death.
Bultmann sees the whole gospel as given to us in mythical language which the modern man must now regard as obsolete. The resurrection is an example of this. The truth is found by getting behind this mythical language and finding the meaning buried beneath it. source Machen, however, notes a difference between the preaching of Paul and the aspirations of those devoted to the mystery religions.
At this point is discovered an enormous difference between Paul and the mystery religions. In the mystery religions everything led up to the mystic vision; without that mystic vision there was no escape from the miseries of the old life. But according to Paul, the mighty change was produced by the acceptance of a simple story, an account of what had happened only a few years before, when Jesus died and rose again. From the acceptance of that story there proceeds a new knowledge, a gnosis. But this higher gnosis in Paul is not the means of salvation, as it is in the mystery religions; it is only one of the effects of salvation. This difference is no mere matter of detail. On the contrary, it involves a contrast between two entirely different worlds of thought and life. source
καὶ ἐπέβαλον αὐτοῖς τὰς χεῖρας καὶ ἔθεντο εἰς τήρησιν εἰς τὴν αὔριον, ἦν γὰρ ἑσπέρα ἤδη.
And they laid hands on them and put [them] in jail for tomorrow because it was now evening.
Paraphrase: Now since it was getting late, the officers seized them and put them in prison intending to question them the next day.
πολλοὶ δὲ τῶν ἀκουσάντων τὸν λόγον ἐπίστευσαν, καὶ ἐγενήθη ὁ ἀριθμὸς τῶν ἀνδρῶν ὡς χιλιάδες πέντε.
Ἐγένετο δὲ ἐπὶ τὴν αὔριον συναχθῆναι αὐτῶν τοὺς ἄρχοντας καὶ τοὺς πρεσβυτέρους καὶ τοὺς γραμματεῖς ἐν Ἰερουσαλήμ

Paraphrase: Then the Holy Spirit came down on Peter again and gave him courage to face this impressive assembly. “Elders of our people,
εἰ ἡμεῖς σήμερον ἀνακρινόμεθα ἐπὶ εὐεργεσίᾳ ἀνθρώπου ἀσθενοῦς, ἐν τίνι οὗτος σέσωσται,
If we today are on trial for a good deed of the impotent man, in what this man is healed.
Paraphrase: I assume that we are on trial today because of the good thing which you can see was done to this gentleman. We all are witnesses to the fact that this same man who sat at the temple gate completely lame is now able to walk and has been healed of his handicap. You have asked us in whose name or by whose power this miracle was performed.
γνωστὸν ἔστω πᾶσιν ὑμῖν καὶ παντὶ τῷ λαῷ Ἰσραὴλ ὅτι ἐν τῷ ὀνόματι Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τοῦ Ναζωραίου, ὃν ὑμεῖς ἐσταυρώσατε, ὃν ὁ θεὸς ἤγειρεν ἐκ νεκρῶν, ἐν τούτῳ οὗτος παρέστηκεν ἐνώπιον ὑμῶν ὑγιής.
Let it be known to you all and to all the people of Israel that in the Name of Jesus Christ, of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead; in this Name, this man stands before you healthy.
Paraphrase: Well let me answer this question very plainly. This miracle of healing was done in the Name of Jesus, the Nazarene, our great Messiah-King. Yes, the same Jesus whom you nailed to a cross as the lowest of criminals. Yes, the same Jesus whom God brought out of the tomb triumphant which we all witnessed. Yes, it is in the Name of this Jesus that this man, who was lame from birth, now stands before you on two perfectly strong and healthy legs.
ὅτι gives us the content of the γνωστὸν.
οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ λίθος ὁ ἐξουθενηθεὶς ὑφ’ ὑμῶν τῶν οἰκοδόμων, ὁ γενόμενος εἰς κεφαλὴν γωνίας.
This is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, which is become for the head of the corner.
Paraphrase: Now you men, gathered here today, are the ones with the responsibility of shepherding God’s people and for leading them in the right way, but now look what has happened. That very Stone which you builders threw aside as worthless, that Stone has become the very cornerstone upon which the entire arch leans!” (Psalm 118:22)
καὶ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν ἄλλῳ οὐδενὶ ἡ σωτηρία, οὐδὲ γὰρ ὄνομά ἐστιν ἕτερον ὑπὸ τὸν οὐρανὸν τὸ δεδομένον ἐν ἀνθρώποις ἐν ᾧ δεῖ σωθῆναι ἡμᾶς.
and salvation is not in no one other, for neither is an other Name under heaven, being given among men, by which it is necessary for us to be saved.
Paraphrase: Now you and every person in Israel should learn this great fact. There is only one Name on earth and in heaven in which a person can find salvation. There is no other possibility of avoiding the just wrath of God against our sin unless we take refuge in this Name which God Himself has given us, the Name of Jesus. This Stone has been setup by God to be a solid foundation for all those who will stand on it, but a stone which causes all other people to stumble and fall to their own destruction. (Romans 9:33; 1 Peter 2:8)
